Inleiding
Neo-Renaissancistische WINKEL met BOVENWONING uit ca. 1880, met Empire-invloed in het interieur. De kern van het pand is ouder. De winkel en de gevel stammen uit de tijd dat herenmodezaak W.A. van Houte het pand betrok.
De winkel met woning staat in een gesloten gevelwand met winkelpanden in het beschermd stadsgezicht van Zwolle binnen de stadsgracht.
Omschrijving
Het gebouw is opgetrokken op een vrijwel vierkante plattegrond, over twee bouwlagen met een mezzanino, onder een schilddak met rode Hollandse pannen. De gevel is boven een hardstenen plint gepleisterd en rijkelijk voorzien van gestucte details. De winkelpui en woonverdiepingen zijn verschillend bewerkt en worden beiden afgesloten door een kroonlijst met casementen. De kroonlijst boven de mezzanino is voorzien van guttae en is zwaarder en steekt verder over dan die boven de winkelpui. Boven de etalage is op de kroonlijst een fronton geplaatst.
De winkelpui bestaat uit een etalageruit onder een korfboog tussen twee glasdeuren met bovenlichten. De zwikken van de korfboog zijn gevuld met smeedijzeren krullen, ter plaatse van de sluitsteen bevind zich een guirlande en onder de etalageruit is het gevelvlak voorzien van spaarvelden met ronde decoraties. Onderin de deuren zijn panelen aangebracht. De etalage en deuren zijn van elkaar gescheiden door pilasters en zuiltjes met casementen en lijsten. De gevel op de verdiepingen wordt beëindigd door getande hoekblokken. De vensters met bovenlicht op de eerste verdieping zijn voorzien van kuifornamenten en gestucte profiellijsten rond de bovenlichten. Tussen deze en de mezzanino-vensters korte cordonlijsten op consoles. De mezzanino-vensters bevinden zich in een rechtgesloten lijst met voluten.
In het interieur zijn onder meer de tussendeuren, wandbetimmeringen en kasten bewaard gebleven. Deze zijn voorzien van een uitgebreid decoratiepatroon van onder meer pilasters met fantasiekapitelen, lijsten, attieken, trygliefen en metopen, casementen, segmentboogfrontons en driehoekige frontons, dit alles voorzien van ornamenten als sluitstenen, bollen, eiermotieven, guirlandes, voluten en strikken.

Neo-Renaissance SHOP with FLAT above from c. 1880, with Empire influence in the interior. The core of the building is older. The shop and the facade date from when menswear business W.A. van Houte occupied the building.
The shop with flat is located in a continuous facade wall with shop units in the protected streetscape of Zwolle within the city moat.
Description
The building is constructed on an approximately square ground plan, over two storeys with a mezzanine, under a hipped roof with red Dutch tiles. The facade is rendered above a sandstone plinth and richly provided with stucco details. The shop front and residential storeys are treated differently and are both finished by a cornice with casements. The cornice above the mezzanine is provided with guttae and is heavier and projects further than that above the shop front. Above the display window a pediment is placed on the cornice.
The shop front consists of a display window under a basket arch between two glass doors with fanlights. The spandrels of the basket arch are filled with wrought iron scrolls, at the location of the keystone there is a garland and below the display window the facade is provided with spandrel fields with round decorations. Panels are fitted in the bottom of the doors. The display window and doors are separated from each other by pilasters and small columns with casements and mouldings. The facade on the storeys is finished by toothed corner blocks. The windows with fanlight on the first storey are provided with hood ornaments and stucco profile mouldings around the fanlights. Between these and the mezzanine windows short string courses on consoles. The mezzanine windows are located in a straight-sided frame with volutes.
In the interior, among others the internal doors, wall panelling and cupboards have been preserved. These are provided with an extensive decoration pattern of, among others, pilasters with fantasy capitals, mouldings, attics, triglyphs and metopes, casements, segmental arch pediments and triangular pediments, all provided with ornaments such as keystones, spheres, egg motifs, garlands, volutes and bows.
