Inleiding
WINKEL met Eclectische BOVENWONING, die is ontworpen door stadstimmerman W. Klinkert en gebouwd in de periode 1882-1883. De oorspronkelijke winkelpui werd in opdracht van de levensverzekeringsmaatschappij "De Utrecht" in 1909 vervangen door een Art Nouveau winkelpui. Op het dak staat een beeld van de god van de handel Mercurius, die het pand de naam 'Mercuur' heeft opgeleverd. Zijn naam stond oorspronkelijk ook op de korte gevel, direct onder de goot, maar is nu verdwenen evenals de wangen en top van de dakkapel erboven.
Het wigvormige perceel waarop het is gebouwd ligt op de splitsing van de Luttekestraat en de Korte Luttekestraat, waardoor het gebouw de afsluiting van twee rijen winkel/woonpanden vormt. Het pand staat tegenover een andere winkel met een Art Nouveau winkelpui in het beschermd stadsgezicht van Zwolle binnen de stadsgracht.
Omschrijving
Het pand is opgetrokken op een wigvormige plattegrond over drie bouwlagen, onder een afgeknot schilddak met antracietgrijze Hollandse pannen en een overstekende goot. Op de kop een rondgesloten dakkapel met bovenlicht. De gevels zijn gepleisterd en tussen de bouwlagen voorzien van waterlijsten.
De etalageruiten in teakhouten kozijnen bevinden zich in de kopgevel, de linker zijgevel (W) en in de linker vensteras van de rechter zijgevel (O). In de kopgevel en linker zijgevel bevinden zich de ingangen van de winkel, in de rechter zijgevel de toegang tot de bovenwoning. Aan de twee straten zijn de verdiepingen onderverdeeld in drie vensterassen, de kopgevel telt één vensteras. De gebogen etalageruiten in de kopgevel zijn gevat in geklonken kwadrantkolommen van gietijzer, links in de westelijke zijgevel worden ze gescheiden door muurdammen met pilasters. De pilasters op de muurdammen risaleren in de bolle kroonlijst tussen begane grond en eerste verdieping. Zowel in de kroonlijst als in de pilasters gestileerde basreliëfs. De pilasters, kroonlijst en gevelvlakken onder de etalageruiten zijn uitgevoerd in hardsteen. In de etalageruiten zijn aan de bovenkant gebogen roeden aangebracht met daarin facetgeslepen glas. De ingangen van de winkel bestaan uit glasdeuren met een houten afgeschuind kozijn met bovenlichten zoals in de etalageruiten. De ruiten in de portiek aan de voorzijde zijn gebogen.
De vensterassen boven de etalages bevatten rechtgesloten kozijnen onder even brede cordonlijsten, waarin twee smalle vensters met bovenlichten onder segmentbogen. Boven de etalage in de rechter zijgevel bevinden zich een rechtgesloten spaarveld en een getoogd venster, ook onder cordonlijsten.
In de rechter zijgevel zijn rond de bovenlichten van de getoogde T-vensters en ingang getoogde geprofileerde lijsten geplaatst. De ingang bestaat uit een dubbele houten deur onder een bovenlicht.
Waardering
De winkel en bovenwoning zijn van algemeen architectuurhistorisch en stedenbouwkundig belang vanwege:

SHOP with Eclectic UPPER STOREY DWELLING, designed by city carpenter W. Klinkert and built in the period 1882-1883. The original shop front was replaced in 1909 at the behest of the life insurance company "De Utrecht" with an Art Nouveau shop front. On the roof stands a statue of Mercurius, the god of commerce, which has given the building the name 'Mercuur'. His name originally also appeared on the short facade, directly below the gutter, but has now disappeared along with the flanking pieces and top of the roof dormer above it.
The wedge-shaped plot on which it is built lies at the junction of the Luttekestraat and the Korte Luttekestraat, whereby the building forms the closure of two rows of shop/residential buildings. Description
The building is erected on a wedge-shaped plan over three storeys, under a truncated hipped roof with anthracite-grey Dutch tiles and overhanging gutter. On the gable a closed roof dormer with fanlight. The facades are plastered and between the storeys provided with drip mouldings.
The display windows in teak wooden frames are located in the gable, the left side facade (W) and in the left window bay of the right side facade (E). In the gable and left side facade are the shop entrances, in the right side facade the access to the upper dwelling. On the two streets the storeys are subdivided into three window bays, the gable contains one window bay. The curved display windows in the gable are set in riveted cast-iron quadrant columns, on the left in the western side facade they are separated by wall piers with pilasters. The pilasters on the wall piers project into the curved cornice between ground floor and first floor. In both the cornice and in the pilasters stylised bas-reliefs. The pilasters, cornice and facade surfaces below the display windows are executed in ashlar. In the display windows curved glazing bars are fitted at the top with facet-cut glass. The shop entrances consist of glass doors with a wooden bevelled frame with fanlights as in the display windows. The panes in the portico at the front are curved.
The window bays above the shop fronts contain right-angled frames under equally wide stringcourses, containing two narrow windows with fanlights under segmental arches. Above the display window in the right side facade are a right-angled spandrel panel and an arched window, also under stringcourses.
In the right side facade arched profiled mouldings are placed around the fanlights of the arched T-windows and entrance. The entrance consists of a double wooden door under a fanlight.
Assessment
The shop and upper dwelling are of general architectural-historical and urban-planning significance because of:
