Introduction

NOTABLE'S RESIDENCE, built in 1922 to a design by the Leiden architect H.J. Jesse on commission of notary H. Eerdbeek. Originally the ground floor served as an office and the first floor and attic for residential purposes.

The Neo-Historicist building style of the property is inspired by the sober building tradition of Dutch and English country house construction from the 17th and 18th centuries. Characteristic are the overhanging roofs, windows with glazing bars and richly ornamented entrance sections. The corner turret recalls both a fortified house and the characteristic garden rooms and cupolas on historic country estates.

In the interior, which is in virtually original condition, the same historicist building style is applied. At various places in the house coloured tile tableaux with figurative representations and tiles with inscriptions have been installed.

The property stands on the Zeeweg and is built against the adjoining older double dwelling house (no. 146-148).

Description

Two-storey partly subcellar property on square plan under truncated hipped roof with curve, covered with tuile du Nord tiles. The facades are built in brown brick. Simple wooden frieze under gutter moulding on corbels. On the front right-hand side a corner turret under octagonal bell roof covered with tuile du Nord tiles. On the rear against the left side wall a two-storey flat-topped extension. Arched windows with heavy wooden frames and 20-pane fanlights.

Quasi-symmetrical three-bay front facade (south) with central entrance section. In the right window axis of the front facade narrow windows with 16-pane fanlights.

The entrance section consists of a heavy panelled door decorated with wood carving under a 15-pane fanlight and a stone step on stone surround. The entrance is accentuated by a wooden cornice with moulded cornice and pilasters on stone plinths. In the roof shield on the front two small roof dormers with segmental arch pediments.

On the ground floor in the turret a wooden arched door between small straight-sided six-pane windows. Above this three standing oval windows likewise with six-pane glazing bars. On the first floor three narrow windows with straight-sided fanlight.

The left side facade (west) has three window bays.

Top left in the rear facade (north) a narrow pointed-arch window with leaded glass and special tracery in the head. In the window a small stained glass representation is incorporated. Interior

Interior in virtually original condition featuring among others on the ground floor a large hall with plastered walls, marble floor and a staircase executed in rich wood carving. Arched doors in dark wood imitation with architrave and corbels executed in wood carving. In the east wall a pointed-arch opening to the tower.

Original waiting room (now: kitchen) featuring among others a tiled chimney breast and moulded wooden chimneypiece on half columns with capitals. Between the Delft blue tiles coloured tile tableaux with biblical representations. The walls of the original kitchen are tiled to the ceiling with white tiles. Here too coloured tile tableaux with landscapes and in Delft blue with inscriptions. Floor of black/white tiles, original cupboards and porcelain sink.

Other rooms with simple stucco ceilings, tiled walls with (partly original) wallpaper, parquet floors and marble chimney breasts. On the first floor identical doors as on the ground floor, in the east wall three pointed-arch leaded glass stair lights with special tracery. In the leaded glass medallions of stained glass with small figures are incorporated. Two bathrooms (one in the tower) with original sanitary ware and here too Delft blue tile tableaux and tiles with inscriptions. The attic storey is completely partitioned off and contains three bedrooms.
