The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

Both residential houses were originally built as a LONG-GABLE FARMHOUSE in 1778 in regional building style. The property also functioned as a clog-maker's workshop. In the third quarter of the nineteenth century, the left section, where the stable was, was converted into a dwelling. The building stands at the corner of Boschweg with a notably sloping rear yard. The building is now situated in the built-up area of Schijndel and number 68 has been converted into a shop following a 1995 restoration. Number 66 remained as a residential dwelling.

Description

The single-storey detached building comprises seven bays and has a rectangular floor plan. On the gabled roof, the front is covered with black old Dutch tiles, the rear with red tiles. The chimneys of both properties have been newly pointed. The residential house at number 66 is constructed of red machine-made brick and features three six-pane windows with brick sills. Before 1995 these were six-pane sash windows. Above the fourth bay from the left, a dormer window was added in 1975. In the third bay from the left is placed a panelled door with divided fanlight. In the side gable are cross windows renewed in 1975, two on the ground floor and two in the loft. The former residential house at number 68 has gables of red hand-made brick. This section of three bays possesses two twenty-pane sash windows with grey-painted wooden sills. The shutters and fittings are authentic. To the left of these is the front door, a clamp door with fanlight and finely carved egg-moulding in the door frame. The side gable has on the left a twenty-pane sash window with shutters and on the right a nine-pane sash window as an upper-room window. Above this a loft hatch with a four-pane window in it. At the roof ridge three dove-holes with herringbone brick arches and rest platforms. The rear gable has a considerably lower roof eaves line than the front gable. At the lower part the roof makes a slight bend. In the rear gable are cellar windows, a clamp door with three-part fanlight to the yard and a sixteen-pane sash window.

House number 66 and 68 have a layout that is essentially identical. The layout, but particularly the decoration and authenticity of the former residential house at number 68 is exceptional. Via the front door the hearth is entered, there is no hallway. Grey paving stones lie on the floor. On the right a fireplace has been built against the wall. The large fireplace has a profiled wooden frame and is internally lined with white and tortoiseshell tiles in a check pattern. The ceiling comprises an under-tie beam, tie beams, collar ties and sprockets. Behind the hearth is the geut, a small kitchen. On the right is a clamp door to the cellar. This cellar is divided in two and has a floor of red and grey paving stones. Next to this door is another door which via a wooden ladder gives access to the upper room. On the left is a provision cupboard, a wooden staircase to the loft and a clamp door which leads to a room. From the hearth, to the right beside the fireplace, is a door to the goeikamer, the best room. The rear wall is intended for box beds on either side and a wooden ladder to the upper room in the middle. This is hidden from view by its design as a wooden cabinet wall. The central section steps back slightly. All panelled doors have oval wooden door knobs. The layout is accentuated by door and corner pilasters and a cornice with egg-moulding at the top. The woodwork is painted grey and liver-coloured. The ceiling consists of narrowly saw-cut timber, as does that of the bedroom beside the kitchen. The loft staircase leads on the left to a large undivided space. In the middle of this space stands a wide, clay-rendered chimney. Parts of the walls consist of wattle and daub. This fragile wattle work has been covered with boarding since the 1995 restoration. The sunken floor has been levelled with wooden floorboards. The roof truss structure consists of rough timber beams, which are partly hewn. The mortise and tenon construction is partly reinforced by iron fittings and nails. To the right of the loft staircase is a small wooden staircase that leads to a lower loft room.

Valuation

The original LONG-GABLE FARMHOUSE from 1778 represents cultural-historical significance as the object is constructed in regional building style and has been preserved in this form, construction, material use and layout; the integrity and authenticity of these historical qualities represent scarcity value when the object is considered in a national perspective while both the building history and architectural history hold documentary qualities within the long-gable farmhouse. The location of the farmhouse at the junction of Boschweg, Bunderstraat, Hoofdstraat and Voortstraat contributes in a remarkable manner, in combination with the linden trees planted along the street facade, to the historical experience and recognition values with unambiguous reference to the originally agricultural purpose of the object.
