The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

In the railway embankment of the railway line Boxtel-Wesel, there remain the remains of an ANTI-TANK ASPARAGUS BARRIER, consisting of two parts, located at approximately 50 metres to the east and west of the point where it crosses the Peel-Raam line, which was constructed in 1939 and forms part of the fortification. Both anti-tank asparagus barriers are oriented towards the east. By placing the western barrier, a German armoured train derailed on 10 May 1940 at this location, having previously crossed the fortification. The remains of twisted asparagus barriers in the western barrier still recall this derailment.

Description.

Of the barrier against trains, armoured cars and tanks, there remains the concrete foundation bed, approximately 15 metres wide, deeply founded and approximately two metres thick, in which the pointed double I-profiles (so-called asparagus barriers) were anchored. The axis of the barrier is perpendicular to that of the railway embankment. The barrier was also continued over the slope of the embankment. At both (northern and southern) ends of the barrier there remain parts of the asparagus barriers cast firmly in the concrete; at the level of the railway tracks the barrier was only set at the last moment and there are remains of the pits intended for it. In 1988 part of the two barriers was restored; among other things, new I-profiles were welded onto the remains of the old asparagus barriers, but original asparagus barriers were also re-welded onto the western barrier. In addition to the concrete foundation and the remains of the original asparagus barriers, the repositioned authentic asparagus barriers also fall under the protection.

Valuation.

The anti-tank asparagus barrier is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a cultural and geographical development, namely the fortification and subsequent defence of the Netherlands during the Second World War and is as such an important document of military history. It is of architectural and building-historical importance because of the particular use of materials and the application of modern materials and techniques, in particular in the use of reinforced concrete. It has ensemble values as an essential component of a larger whole which is of cultural-historical importance and is important because of the high-quality nature of the construction and the historical-spatial relationship with roads, waters and soil conditions. The whole has great experiential value and as a large-scale military complex and reminder of an important episode in national history is rare.
