The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

Directly to the west of the Defence Canal, in 1939 a RAMPART was constructed with the aid of earth from the canal. By means of the rampart, the exits of the casements and the rear line of the main resistance zone could be concealed from the enemy's view. In addition, the rampart offered the advantage that personnel in semi-permanent positions had a better overview of the field of fire. After the war, the profile of the rampart at Mill was altered. This was partly done because Rijkswaterstaat locally constructed a broad inspection path passable by motor vehicles along the canal. Over considerable distances, through land consolidation the entire rampart disappeared. At the location of the railway line, the railway embankment partly functioned as a rampart. This railway embankment is still entirely present.

Description.

The earthen rampart is approximately two metres high on the front side and approximately 15 metres wide. Towards the gorge side the height decreases sharply. Between casement 522 and 528, between 530 and 531, between 532 and 535, and finally between 537 and 545 the rampart is entirely or largely disappeared. On the remaining places part of the original profile is retained, albeit that for the maintenance of the canal a path passable by motor vehicles has been constructed on that side. No traces remain of the original communication trenches, bent at right angles across the rampart from the gorge towards the front, leading to the casement entrances.

Valuation.

The Earthen Rampart is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical value as a distinctive expression of a cultural and geographical development, namely the strengthening and subsequent defence of the Netherlands during the Second World War and is as such an important document of military history. It is of architectural and construction-historical importance due to the use of materials and the application of modern techniques. It has ensemble values as an essential component of a larger whole, which is of cultural-historical importance and is of importance due to the high-quality nature of the buildings and the historical-spatial relationship with roads, waterways and soil conditions. The whole has great experiential value and as a large-scale military complex and reminder of an important episode in national history is rare.
