Inleiding

Introduction

Roman Catholic H.H. Simon and Judas CRUCIFORM BASILICA designed by architect Joseph Cuypers, completed in 1936. The church is situated together with the substantially altered pastory (outside protection) in the bend of the Dorpsstraat, within the built-up area. The predecessor of this church was a water authority church.

Description

The Roman Catholic cruciform basilica is built in red brick under a composite gabled roof covered with anthracite-grey Dutch tiles. The roof of the transept cuts below the ridge line the bent roof of the nave. On the west side is a westwork, above which a straight tower appears to taper, as the wall surface of the westwork on the front transitions into buttresses of the tower. The tower is crowned by a constricted, four-sided spire covered with tiles in Dutch bond. In the westwork below a three-light window is located, in a portico with a blunt pointed arch, a double wooden door under a Tudor arch. On the east side the church is closed off by a seven-sided apse. In the angles of the apse and the nave two single-storey, flat-topped annexes are realized, with on the corner of one of them a chimney with masonry decoration. The chimney on the corner of the other annex has disappeared. In the gable tops of the transept large composite windows with herringbone arch. Parabolic windows, other composite windows and windows with herringbone arch decorate the facades further. The fork traceries in the parabolic windows and the traceries of the composite windows are executed in brick.

In the church the nave and the side aisles are spanned by pressed cross vaults. Nave and side aisles are separated by parabolic arches, the bays and side aisles by pressed pointed arches. The vaults are executed in yellow brick, the pillars, arches and corbels in geometric patterns of yellow, red and greyish-brown brick. The same applies to the windows and door frames of the interior. The wooden balcony and the doors in the westwork are designed in a style related to Art Deco, as is the stained glass. The interior of the church is still complete. Thus among other things the following are still present: the Stations of the Cross in mosaic from 1937, the confessionals, the original tile floor. From the water authority church originate among other things: the altar, the font, the divided communion railing of sandstone and marble and the majority of the pews.

Valuation

The cruciform basilica is of general cultural, architectural-historical and urban planning importance:

- as an exponent of the building boom of Catholic churches and pastories after the restoration of the episcopal hierarchy in 1853, which was notably evident for decades especially in Twente.

- owing to the characterizing location in the bend of the Dorpsstraat

- owing to the exuberant design of the interior whereby various stylistic influences are combined in a manner characteristic of Jos. Cuypers

- owing to the integrity of exterior and interior, with many original interior components
