Inleiding
Het WACHTLOKAAL ten behoeve van de schippersvereniging "Het Wakend Oog", tegenwoordig koffiehuis, staat aan de kade van de haven van Terschelling, op de hoek met de Torenstraat die vanaf de kade naar het noordwesten loopt. De ingang bevindt zich in de kopgevel op deze straathoek. "Het Wakend Oog" stamt uit 1882 toen het, blijkens één van de vele gevelstenen, werd opgericht door oud-burgemeester G.J.E. Eschauzier, ter herinnering aan de Terschellinger Noordpoolvaarder Willem Barendtsz. Het pand is een ontwerp van architect M. Daalder te Den Helder in eclectische stijl met enkele Neo-Renaissance elementen, hetgeen kenmerkend is ook voor het overige werk van deze architect op Terschelling, zoals de N.H. kerk te Midsland. Het pand is in 1991 zorgvuldig gerestaureerd, gemoderniseerd en inwendig aangepast aan de functie van horecagelegenheid, echter met behoud van een aantal interieurelementen. Twee windschermen aan de voorgevel zijn nieuw en vallen buiten de bescherming van rijkswege.
Omschrijving
"Het Wakend Oog" is opgetrokken in bruine bakstenen met gele gevelbanden rondom lopend, op een rechthoekige plattegrond. Het zadeldak is gedekt met zwarte verbeterde Hollandse pannen. De twee topgevels bevatten een klimmend boogfries waarvan de rondbogen in gele stenen zijn uitgevoerd. Een rollaag sluit de oplopende gevelranden af; een gemetselde geelbruine rechthoek met daarop een natuurstenen piron bekroont de topgevels. Ter hoogte van de goot een getrapte gevelverbreding. De zesruitsvensters in voor- en achtergevel en in de rechterzijgevel hebben een licht gehoekte bovenzijde; een schouderstuk loopt door tot aan de gevelband, en bestaat uit gele, rode en bruine strekken en aanzet- en sluitstenen. Ook de toegangsdeur in de voorgevel is zo afgewerkt; aan weerszijden van deze deur twee vensters. Centraal in de topgevel een gepleisterde gevelsteen onder geel-rode segmentboog. Hierop is in reliëf afgebeeld een oog en de tekst: "het wakend oog 1680-1882", samen omvat door een touw met platte knoop middenonder.
Onderaan de gevel twee zwarte stenen gedenkplaten met de teksten "ter herinnering/aan den grooten noordpoolzeevaarder/WILLEM BARENTSZ/ op dit eiland geboren/+ 1540 + 20 juni 1597/ bij NOVA ZEMBLA" en "ter aandenken/aan den heer P.ESCHAUZIER/oud burgemeester/van het eiland Terschelling/van 1810 tot 1837". In de achtergevel is één gekoppeld venster en één enkel verdiepingsvenster; in de rechterzijgevel twee gekoppelde vensters. Aan de rechterzijgevel, die naar de haven is gericht, is een houten zitplank bevestigd, en nog twee zwarte stenen gedenkplaten: een uit 1982, en een met de tekst "de eerste steen/gelegd door/P.J.E Eschauzier/kleinzoon van den oud burgemeester/10 juni 1882". De linkerzijgevel bevat een hoog klein vierruitsvenster.
In het portaal bevinden zich twee natuurstenen gedenkplaten, waarvan de één een gedicht bevat over een wakend oog, en de ander, gedateerd 14 december 1882, een huldeblijk is aan G.J. Eschauzier, de stichter.

The WATCH ROOM in service of the skippers' association "Het Wakend Oog", nowadays a coffee house, stands on the quay of the harbour of Terschelling, on the corner with the Torenstraat which runs from the quay to the northwest. The entrance is located in the end gable on this street corner. "Het Wakend Oog" dates from 1882 when it, as evidenced by one of the many gable stones, was erected by former mayor G.J.E. Eschauzier, in memory of the Terschelling Arctic voyager Willem Barendtsz. The building is a design by architect M. Daalder of Den Helder in eclectic style with some Neo-Renaissance elements, which is also characteristic of this architect's other work on Terschelling, such as the Reformed Church in Midsland. The building was carefully restored in 1991, modernized and internally adapted to the function of a catering establishment, however with the retention of a number of interior elements. Two wind screens on the front facade are new and fall outside the scope of national protection.

"Het Wakend Oog" is erected in brown bricks with yellow facade bands running around, on a rectangular plan. The gabled roof is covered with black improved Dutch tiles. The two end gables contain a climbing arch frieze with the arches executed in yellow stones. A fillet closes off the rising gable edges; a mortared yellow-brown rectangle with a natural stone coping crowns the end gables. At the level of the gutter a stepped gable extension. The six-paned windows in front and rear facade and in the right side facade have a slightly angled top; a shoulder piece runs through to the facade band, and consists of yellow, red and brown stretches and setting and closing stones. The access door in the front facade is also finished in this way; on either side of this door two windows. Central in the end gable a plastered gable stone under a yellow-red segmental arch. On it is depicted in relief an eye and the text: "het wakend oog 1680-1882", together surrounded by a rope with flat knot in the middle below.
At the bottom of the facade two black stone memorial plaques with the texts "in memory/of the great Arctic seafarer/WILLEM BARENTSZ/ born on this island/+ 1540 + 20 June 1597/ at NOVA ZEMBLA" and "in remembrance/of Mr P.ESCHAUZIER/former mayor/of the island of Terschelling/from 1810 to 1837". In the rear facade is one coupled window and one single storey window; in the right side facade two coupled windows. On the right side facade, which faces the harbour, a wooden bench is attached, and two more black stone memorial plaques: one from 1982, and one with the text "the first stone/laid by/P.J.E Eschauzier/grandson of the former mayor/10 June 1882". The left side facade contains a high small four-paned window.
