The register's description

Inleiding

- vanwege de esthetische kwaliteit van het ontwerp;

- vanwege het materiaalgebruik en de ornamentiek;

- vanwege de architectonische gaafheid van het exterieur en deels van het interieur;

- vanwege de plaats in de geschiedenis van de scheepvaart en het reddingsbootwezen;

Introduction

The lifeboat station was established on Terschelling in 1824. The LIFEBOAT STATION BUILDING was built in 1904 in Chalet style. It originally stood in the water of De Kom near the harbour. After the motor lifeboat "Brandaris" came into service, the old shelter was no longer needed, and was relocated and taken into use by the island's diving club. The building now stands along the quay and faces south.

Description

The chalet-like building has a rectangular plan and a gabled roof covered by bands and resting on two times nine blocks. It is built of wooden prefabricated components, each of which is itself formed by posts, rails and panels. The continuous wooden plinth consists of six battens. In the front facade is a wide double door in the centre; on the wooden-clad gable top (with weathervane and three crockets at the corners) is the dating executed in cast-iron numerals. The left side facade is symmetrically divided by two nine-pane windows with three-pane fanlights into three times two fields with crossed posts. The right side facade has the same gable layout. A wooden door replaces the southern window, above which is a three-pane fanlight. The rear facade has no window openings, consists of two bays of wooden battens and is crowned by a wooden-clad gable top with weathervane and three crockets. From the original INTERIOR, notably still present are the beam ceiling, the thick wooden pillars to which the boat was tied and the two launch ramps.

Valuation

The lifeboat station building is of cultural-historical and architectural-historical importance:

- on account of the aesthetic quality of the design;

- on account of the use of materials and ornamentation;

- on account of the architectural integrity of the exterior and partly of the interior;

- on account of the place in the history of shipping and the lifeboat service;

- on account of typological rarity, as a structure typical of coastal regions.
