The register's description

Inleiding

Waardering

Timmerfabriek uit 1913-1915, van algemeen belang vanwege:

- cultuurhistorie, als belangrijke representant van een voor Nederland belangrijke industrietak, namelijk de scheepsbouw;

- architectuurhistorie, vanwege het utilitaire, door functie en constructie bepaalde uiterlijk, dat de tijd van de jongere bouwkunst ademt;

- bouwtechniek, vanwege de gave en voor de bouwtijd en de functie kenmerkende betonconstructie en de eveneens typerende stalen ramen;

Introduction

Timber factory of the Royal Company "De Schelde", built 1913-1915 in a rational architecture.

Description

Timber factory, three storeys high with flat roof, in the middle provided with an elongated gabled roof.

The floor plan is a rectangle, with the north side strongly bevelled. The building has a concrete skeleton, which is filled with rows of steel windows with glazing bars, mainly in 7x5 panes; some windows on the northeast corner of the building are provided with a central post and a calf.

The north facade is nine bays wide, with the right three bays wider with coupled windows; the three bays to the left of the centre are provided with a pediment-like cornice. The northeast corner is positioned at an angle. The east facade, which is twenty-one bays wide, is at the location of three bays which on the ground floor contain one broad entrance, provided with the same pediment-like cornice as on the north facade.

The interior is dominated by the concrete skeleton consisting of three stacked beam floors with beams in one direction, supported by columns on a regular grid. Through this manner of construction, which is not particularly rare in itself but is here well preserved, freely divisible spaces were created. A centrally located light court, illuminated by means of the glazed gabled roof supported by Polonceau trusses, guaranteed together with the large glass areas in the facades optimal light entry. Because of the nature of the business (primarily carpentry workshop for the finishing and furnishing of ships), good lighting was needed. Furthermore, the concrete construction meant that the building presented itself both internally and externally as a prime example of modern architecture in terms of material and construction. The concrete construction is defining for the essence of the building, whereby the other components are dictated.

Valuation

Timber factory from 1913-1915, of general importance because of:

- cultural-history, as an important representative of an industrial sector important for the Netherlands, namely shipbuilding;

- architectural history, because of the utilitarian exterior, determined by function and construction, that breathes the spirit of modern architecture;

- building technique, because of the well-preserved concrete construction characteristic of the period and function, and the likewise typical steel windows;

- rarity of this type of well-preserved industrial building, in particular of timber factories.
