Omschrijving
Inleiding
Hier staat "AN NO 19 24".

Description
Introduction
The Reformed CHURCH with TOWER was built in 1924-1925, commissioned by the church council of the Reformed Church at Beetgum. The church is situated, together with the parsonage and the church halls -which do not qualify for state protection- on an L-shaped plot, set back from the road and oriented towards the south. The church was designed by architect A. Nauta from Leeuwarden in a building style related to the Amsterdam School. This building style displays the general characteristics of church construction from the nineteen-twenties as regards the development of the ground plan in the direction of a fan shape, the formal language of the Amsterdam School and the use of coloured glass for decorative motifs. The square tower stands against the south-east side of the eastern portal.
Description
The Reformed church with tower has the form of a Latin cross. The ground plan is centrally oriented and fan-shaped. The building is two storeys high and is covered by a complex gabled roof of black corrugated sheeting (originally black improved Dutch tiles). The 24 metre high tower is crowned by a square spire covered with slate with small roof peaks. The church building is constructed of brown, combed bricks above a tuff stone plinth. The front facade -on the south side- is symmetrically arranged. The main entrance with sloping roof is located in the centre and is flanked on the right side by the tower. The entrance section consists of a door with brick step, concrete lintel and three-part tympanum with coloured stained glass and two portals on either side. In the small portal on the left side are two multi-pane windows and a door. Above the entrance, at the top, is a large rose window with coloured stained glass. The small portal on the right side communicates with the tower. Here are a wooden door on brick step and concrete lintel, above which is a wall stone with Psalm inscription ("OUR HELP IS IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, WHO MADE HEAVEN AND EARTH. PSALM 124:8.").
Above the wall stone six vertical windows, placed two by two, with coloured stained glass, a smaller vertical window, two sound holes and the clock face. Here stands "AN NO 19 24". Between the roof peaks are pear-shaped water spouts. On the spire an iron weather vane with cross and rooster. At the contractions of the fan, against both side facades, are two small portals with wooden doors on brick steps.
In the side facades, wide gable tops are placed in front of the cross arms. Here, in the first storey, are six three-part windows with stained glass and at the top a semicircular window consisting of six vertical windows. In the centre of the rear facade, in front of the short arm, is a similar gable top placed with two small portals on either side. At the top a four-part window with coloured stained glass. Below this four smaller windows. The right portal adjoins the passage connecting the church with the church halls.
The INTERIOR of the Reformed Church is original both in layout and largely also in furnishings. Original are among others the wooden floor, the wooden benches -which no longer stand in the original fan arrangement-, the wooden benches on the gallery in the long arm and the imitation-marble paintings on the heavy columns. The cross vault is formed by barrel vaults consisting of five broad wooden strips. The single-manual organ was made in 1899 by the firm Bakker and Timmenga.
