Inleiding
In 1825 werd tegen het talud van de oude Middelzeedijk een kustweg aangelegd. Vermoedelijk is het TOLHUIS, waar de reizigers het verschuldigde tolgeld moesten betalen, tussen 1851 en 1866 aan dit deel van de Slachtedijk gebouwd: in de Atlas van Eekhof uit 1851 wordt het pand nog niet aangegeven, in de Atlas van Kuiper uit 1866 wel. Het tolhuis, dat naar het oosten is georiënteerd, staat op een vrij klein erf. Het erf wordt aan de voorzijde door de weg begrensd en aan de achterzijde door een sloot. Het eenvoudige blok staat met de voorgevel direct aan de weg. De ramen, die in verhouding heel groot zijn, boden ruim zicht op het naderende verkeer. Het bouwwerk is in een Ambachtelijk-traditionele stijl opgebouwd. De bouwmeester is onbekend. De tegen de noordelijke zijgevel aangebouwde houten schuurtjes vallen buiten bescherming van rijkswege.
Omschrijving
Het bouwwerk heeft een rechthoekige plattegrond en is één bouwlaag hoog. Het is in gele bakstenen opgetrokken en wordt door een zadeldak met zwart geglazuurde Hollandse pannen bedekt. Op de nok staat een gemetselde schoorsteen. In de voorgevel en aan de oostzijde van de zijgevels bevinden zich in totaal vier (twee in de voorgevel) grote zesruitsvensters met houten kozijnen en enkele rollaag. In de top van de voorgevel zit een halfrond venster. De vier vensters rusten op een doorlopende onderdorpel. In de zuidelijke zijgevel zit de houten voordeur met tweeruits bovenlicht. De noordelijke zijgevel wordt grotendeels aan het zicht onttrokken door de vele bijgebouwde houten schuurtjes. Aan de oostzijde van die gevel bevindt zich een deur. De achtergevel is in 1981 gepleisterd en er zijn nieuwe vensters in geplaatst.

Het tolhuis aan de Hegedyk 8 is van algemeen cultuurhistorisch en architectuurhistorisch belang:

Introduction
In 1825 a coastal road was constructed against the slope of the old Middelzeedijk. The TOLLHOUSE, where travellers had to pay the required toll, was presumably built between 1851 and 1866 on this section of the Slachtedijk: in the Atlas of Eekhof from 1851 the building is not yet indicated, but in the Atlas of Kuiper from 1866 it is. The tollhouse, which is oriented towards the east, stands on a fairly small plot. The plot is bounded at the front by the road and at the rear by a ditch. The simple block stands with its front facade directly on the road. The windows, which are proportionally very large, provided ample sight of approaching traffic. The building is constructed in a Crafts-traditional style. The builder is unknown. The wooden sheds built against the northern side facade fall outside state protection.
Description
The building has a rectangular ground plan and is one storey high. It is constructed in yellow brick and is covered by a gabled roof with black glazed Dutch tiles. On the ridge stands a brick chimney. In the front facade and on the east side of the side facades there are in total four (two in the front facade) large six-pane windows with wooden frames and single roller sash. In the top of the front facade is a semicircular window. The four windows rest on a continuous window sill. In the southern side facade is the wooden entrance door with two-pane fanlight. The northern side facade is largely obscured from view by the many adjoining wooden sheds. On the east side of that facade is a door. The rear facade was plastered in 1981 and new windows were inserted.
