Inleiding

Vrijman in Overgangsarchitectuur.

Introduction

The SCHOOL, formerly the State Reed-weaving School now MAVO, was built in 1911 according to designs by the state architect for Education J.A. Vrijman in Transitional architecture. The school was established on the initiative of two ministers, who had taken an interest in the fate of the population in and around Noordwolde. The weaving of baskets and hampers from willow shoots, rattan and reed had developed around 1900 into a domestic industry and was one of the few sources of income. In the winter months, chairs, baskets and hampers were woven, which in the spring were sold by the makers themselves at home and abroad. In order to improve the quality of the products, the Reed-weaving School was built with the help of government funds, for both craft and general education, which are functionally separated within the building. After the Second World War the school was extended with a new wing, which is connected to the original building by a connecting element. This extension falls outside the protection of state heritage, as do the bicycle sheds around the building. The extensions and alterations to the former weaving rooms, of which the original principal forms remain clearly recognisable, also fall outside the protection of state heritage.

Description

The school building has an E-shaped floor plan: the main volume consists of two storeys and the outbuildings broadly consist of one storey. The vertical brickwork consists of red extruded bricks. The composite roof is covered with slates and on the rear with bituminous imitation slates. The north facade has a symmetrical arrangement with an entrance in the middle, three window bays on the left and right sides and on the corners projecting transverse gables. The two storeys are separated by a ashlar cornice under the window sills. The two-light windows of the first storey have an arched stone springer course. The cross windows of the second storey are straight-topped with a lintel and are alternately built up to a Flemish gable, or end just below the roof edge. Wrought wall anchors have been placed on the piers between the windows. The fanlights of all windows still have the original glazing bars. In the step before the entrance is a cellar window. The entrance, with porte brisée, has fanlights and sidelights and the proportions correspond to the broad three-light windows in the transverse gables at the corner. The gable tops of the transverse gables at the corner and of the Flemish gables are boarded with bead moulding. On the roof slope between the Flemish gables are roof dormers with three-light windows under slight roof pitch. At the intersections of the ridge and rafters stand zinc finials.

The rear facade of the main volume is only partially visible due to the adjoining weaving rooms. The relatively narrow windows in both storeys of the main volume are arched. In the roof slope dormers with three-light windows under slight roof pitch. The west facade has in the first storey two original arched two-light windows and above the cornice two straight-topped two-light windows under a lintel. The facade was altered to accommodate a side entrance and a stair hall. To the right of the entrance is an arched T-window and a higher projecting transverse aisle with two-light window with boarded gable tops under half-hip. Simple zinc rainwater heads stand on the ridge corners. The three weaving rooms stand at right angles to the main volume; they are rectangular and two of them have against the southern gable termination, with boarded gable top under half-hip, a lower outbuilding in which originally an external door was located. The eight window-bay-deep wings have T-windows under a lintel. The most eastern and western weaving rooms are connected to the main building via a connecting element; the one in the middle is connected with an outbuilding of the main building.

The INTERIOR of the school has been modernised, whereby the original decorations and interior components have been partially or wholly removed. Among the valuable interior components and elements are constructive elements such as corbels and beams, the chimney mantel, the panelling and the fitted wall in the staff rooms. The granite floors are still present in the corridors. The central staircase is of ashlar. The rooms on the upper storey have barrel vaults with tie-rods and corbels. Each weaving room has an entresol for the storage of weaving materials and products.

Valuation

The reed-weaving school from 1911 is of general cultural-historical importance:

- because of the high degree of importance as a particular expression of a local socio-economic and cultural-historical development, namely that of technical education in general and of the local artistic reed-weaving craft in particular,

- because of the reasonable degree of importance due to the aesthetic quality of the design and the detailing of the interior as far as visible,

- because of the reasonable degree of importance for the development and appearance of the place Noordwolde,

- because of the reasonable degree of importance due to the recognisability of the exterior and the reasonable degree of integrity of the interior,

- because of the reasonable degree of functional rarity of the structure of the building with adjoining reed-weaving rooms.
