Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The remarkable, former electric PUMPING STATION in the open landscape of the polder De Ontginning was designed in 1929 in Cubist Expressionist style and built - according to oral tradition from his son and daughter - under the direction of the architect/hydraulic engineer of the water board R. Zwaga from Wolvega and/or the architect G.K. Bergsma from Wolvega. The execution was in the hands of the Nederlandse Heide Maatschappij. The building is now the clubhouse of the ice skating association Nijelamer.
The pumping station is built on the crown of the polder dyke and thereby lies elevated in relation to the road. A concrete staircase with landing leads to the entrance. The pumping station site is still partially enclosed by the original fencing. On the road side, the site boundary is combined with a bridge railing of the supply canal. The drainage channels under and immediately next to the building were dammed around 1980; the bridge in the Kooiweg has lost its function. Via the former outfall canal, the pumping station is still visually connected to the Schipsloot.
The INTERIOR is not significant for national monument protection.
Description
The pumping station has a roughly rectangular ground plan. The building appears to consist of four simple, square and rectangular building volumes that have been pushed together symmetrically and against each other. The wide, tall chimney with wrought-iron ornaments fulfils the role of visual pivot. On the south side the engine room is situated across the full width of the drainage channel; the north side consists of a central nave of two storeys with the entrance section. On either side of the central nave are small cubic wings that project somewhat forward and to the side, with low, square structures on the corners. All building volumes have a flat roof with a cornice. The elevation of the facade facing the street, constructed in brown brick, is enlivened by the use of sintered brick for the corner volumes and the facade cornice of the central nave. The facade cornices of the building volumes on the street side consist of one or three roll mouldings. The side elevations, the chimney and the south elevation facing the Schipsloot are entirely rendered. All light openings consist of multi-pane steel windows. The windows are arranged in strips that are slightly recessed in the facade and run around the corners, thereby reinforcing the horizontal effect of all building volumes. The window strips on the north side have a roll moulding at the top and bottom. A concrete staircase leads to the landing. Above the wooden panelled door and between the windows, a simple, geometrically decorated concrete flagpole base projects from the facade. The sleeve of the flagpole on the parapet has been moved to the chimney and serves there as a flagpole holder.
The two bridge railings form a visual reminder of the course of the supply canal beneath the road surface. Both have an architectural appearance related to the pumping station.
Valuation
The former pumping station from 1929 is of general cultural and architectural historical importance:
- because of the high degree of significance as a distinctive expression of a landscape development in the municipality,
- because of the high importance due to architectural historical value as an example of Cubist Expressionism,
- because of the particular importance of the pumping station in the oeuvre of the regionally active architect G.K. Bergsma and/or R. Zwaga,
- because of the high degree of aesthetic quality of the work through the subtle ornamental details in the material application and the visual contrast effect,
- because of the high degree of integrity of the exterior,
- because of the reasonable degree of visual integrity in relation to the polder and the waterways,
- because of the high degree of rarity in the province of the architecture of the pumping station.
