Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The interior of the CHURCH has the spatial effect of a central-plan building, despite its floor plan in the form of a Latin cross. Joseph adopted the combination of Latin cross and central-plan from his father P.J.H. Cuypers. The use of this theme should be seen in the light of dissatisfaction with the level of church building in the 1920s and the strong stylistic influence of Gothic. The choice of a centralizing floor plan was related to the liturgical renewal movement. In order to allow churchgoers to actively participate in the mass, a more comprehensible spatial type was needed. Furthermore, albeit in a reorientation towards Romanesque architecture, a contemporary architectural and ornamental style was chosen.
Description
Three-aisle church with shoulder transept executed in brown machine brick. Nave crowned with gabled roof, transept with hipped roof. Campanile-like tower on the west side on rectangular floor plan, crowned with gabled roof on which a spire is placed diagonally across the full width. Around the sound holes lisenes and semicircular arches are laid. The stepped gables and roof lines of the tower are also executed in decorative brickwork. Above the sound holes are clock faces on all four sides. On the west side of the tower an image of church father Dionysius is placed. The apse of the choir is closed 3/8ths. All roofs are covered with slates in Maas bond. The projecting entrance feature under a parabolic arch is covered with a gabled roof, the wall piers on either side curve outward. Above the entrance a five-light window.
Further, complex window features of interwoven pointed arches. The interior of the church shows a centralizing floor plan. The floor plan is actually a Greek cross of which the western arm is doubled to a square, equal to the crossing. The central-plan effect is strengthened by the rising vaults in the choir and transept. These are masonry cross vaults of which the groins and springings are emphasized by decorative brickwork. The vaults are separated by diaphragm arches. The woodwork (balcony balustrade, pews, doors, confessional, pulpit, etc.) is executed in the craft Amsterdam School style. Beneath the tower is the neo-Gothic baptismal font. Pneumatic organ with two manuals and pedal built by B. Pels & Zonen in 1929.
The side aisles are executed in, partly gilded, mosaic.
The glass from the demolished waterworks church is located in the current church in the windows of the nave. The other glass from the 1920s is by Joep Nicolas, member of the renowned glazier family. The inventory of the church is virtually complete. The decoration scheme is also intact.
Valuation
Roman Catholic church of cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban-planning significance:
- because of the exemplary quality of the church, both for the architect's oeuvre and for the revolution in Catholic liturgy in the 1920s.
- by the design with detailing in Amsterdam School style, which in typology is a transitional form between central-plan and Latin cross.
- by the ensemble value of the church as a landmark for Rijssen and by the functional spatial coherence with the rectory.
- the integrity.
