Inleiding

Introduction

Located amid bulb fields and recently (1993) taken out of service, a BULB SHED. The shed was constructed in two phases, in 1909 following renovation and expansion of an older carriage house, in 1930 by major expansion against the west side of it. The section from 1909 lies directly on the Herenweg and concerns the renovation of an old carriage house by architect D. van Letten from Haarlem. The section from 1930 was designed as a modern, centrally heated bulb shed by L. Tol, architect B.N.A. in Lisse.

Description

The bulb shed stands on a rectangular ground plan with an east-west main orientation. The section from 1909 consists of a ground floor and a first storey under a flat roof with mastic. The walls consist of whitewashed masonry in which grooves imitating natural stone have been applied on the street side (E). This street side has a width of seven closely spaced window bays with six-paned casement windows on the first storey and four wide arched passages on the ground floor. The two southern passages have double stable doors, the two northern passages are closed off with windows above a parapet. The section from 1909 has a depth of four widely spaced window bays, of which the three western windows of the first storey are provided with double hinged doors which were more commonly applied in bulb shed construction during this period. On the ground floor the north side has a canopied entrance section from circa 1903 which is flanked by multi-paned windows, of which the western likewise dates from the period around 1930.

The section from 1930 actually consists of two volumes: a transition volume directly adjoining the section from 1909 that served for the supply and removal of bulbs (hereafter referred to briefly as the transport section). This transport section consists of a ground floor and first storey. To the west of this stands the actual bulb shed which is higher and longer than the transition volume (hereafter referred to briefly as the bulb shed). The bulb shed consists of a ground floor, first and second storey. Bulb shed and transport section have a flat roof with mastic covering, the transport section moreover has a saw-tooth roof with two light openings on the north. The bulb shed has on the roof four square wooden ventilation channels covered by tent roofs with mastic covering. The internal structure of the transport section consists of vertical steel H-profiles, on which horizontal H-profiles rest. Perpendicular to these H-profiles lie wooden floor beams on which the working floor of the first storey is fastened. The bulb shed has per storey three compartments along the length of four window bays. The compartments are formed by two transversely placed internal walls in which wooden sliding doors are positioned near both external walls. The structure between the floors was originally formed within the compartments by square wooden pillars between which the bins hung in which the bulbs were laid to dry. The wooden bulb bins were largely removed at a later stage, but the square wooden pillars can still be found in various compartments. When the wooden structure was removed, round steel pillars with H-profiles were subsequently placed under the floor beams.

The section from 1930, which has a gable stone on the north side with the date 5 March 1930, is executed on the outside in reddish-yellow brick. The masonry on the inside is constructed of uniform yellow brick. The exterior masonry is terminated below the roof cornice by a mortared border in black brick. The roof cornice consists of a black glazed tile border which has been placed over the corner. The transport section manifests itself from the road especially in the completely symmetrical north facade with a width of five window bays. On the ground floor there is a double sliding door with a width of two window bays, flanked by a window and a door. The double sliding door and the two ordinary doors are of wood and provided with windows with a multi-paned glazing bar division. The two windows are of steel with multi-paned glazing bar division. On the first storey the windows in the three middle bays are wider and higher than the two windows in the outer bays. The windows here are all of steel with multi-paned glazing bar division. The south facade of the transport section is largely blind.

The bulb shed has a length of eleven window bays which on both the north and south sides over the three storeys are provided with double casement steel multi-paned windows. Below and above the windows are air vents which on the inside are provided with wooden sliding shutters. Sliding shutters are furthermore also present on the inside of the south wall, in front of the windows of the first storey. Against the south side is a stairwell partly executed in reinforced concrete. The masonry of the gable west side has only on the second storey in the middle four windows.

Against the south side of the bulb shed stands the former boiler house, consisting of a basement and ground floor under a flat roof with mastic covering. The tall mortared chimney was replaced by a light metal (not protected) chimney when the boiler was replaced. The old oil-fired boiler stood in the basement of the boiler house, the later one placed on the ground floor. The masonry of the boiler house is, like that of the transport section and the bulb shed, executed in yellow-red brick. Below the roof cornice is likewise a mortared border in black brick, but the tile border placed over the corner is absent.

The interior of the bulb shed contains, in addition to the aforementioned components, also the original installation for central heating. This installation consists of thick round pipes beneath the windows of the frames.

Valuation

The bulb shed is of general interest from an architectural and cultural-historical perspective as a rare surviving example of a large bulb shed that has been largely preserved intact and was constructed in phases. In particular the section from 1930 is of typological importance as an example of a modern bulb shed of that time with central heating system. From a cultural-historical perspective the shed is important as a striking and rare object from the rapidly growing pre-war flower bulb culture in the Netherlands and in particular in the coastal region. Furthermore there is a significant ensemble value between the shed and the adjacent bulb fields, whereby the original context is still present.
