Inleiding
Centraal aan de zuidwestelijke zijde van het Purmerplein gesitueerde reeks winkelwoningen naar ontwerp van B.T. Boeyinga uit 1923-1927 in verstrakte Amsterdamse School, deel uitmakend van het Tuindorp Nieuwendam.
Omschrijving
Vrijstaand bouwblok met drie winkelwoonhuizen. Purmerplein 16en 20 hebben een winkelplattegrond van het type D; Purmerplein18 heeft een winkelplattegrond van het type E. Gebouwd op eensamengesteld grondplan met een begane grond met winkels en magazijnen en op de verdieping en kapverdieping de bovenwoningen en grotendeels opgetrokken in baksteen. Aan weerszijden accentueert een erker de poortfunctie. Het bouwblok heeft een zadeldak gedekt met rodeHollandse pannen en vorsten. Aan de voorzijde wordt hetdakschild onderbroken door een aaneengesloten reeks houten dakkapellenmet horizontaal beschot en met eenvoudige lijst en plat dak. Op de nok gemetselde schoorstenen met uitkraging en opgezette kappen voor de rookanalen.
De voorgevel, grenzend aan het Purmerplein, bevat verschillende winkelpuien; boven een lage plint zijn grote winkelruiten tussen houten posten. De toegangen zijn teruggezet en bereikbaar middels eenvoudigestoep bestaande uit iets verhoogd liggende plaat. In portiekook de waterafvoer van de brede luifel die geheel doorlopendextra beschutting geeft aan het winkelend publiek.
Over de gehele breedte een doorlopende vensterstrook methorizontaal beschot. Aan weerszijden een driezijdige afsluiting oververdieping en kapverdieping. Op de hoeken de staande tandlijsten van in elkaar grijpende bakstenen. Op de verdieping aanelke zijde een venster. Op de derde bouwlaag zijn de venstersverdiept geplaatst met een schuine overgang naar hetgevelvlak. Verder enkele accenten in baksteen.
Eenvoudige brede gootlijst sluit de gevel af.
De zijgevels tonen aan de bovenzijde de verlengde aanzet vande schoorsteen, als decoratief element samengaand met eenhorizontale bakstenen accent. Onder het stenen waterbord haaksvermetselde bakstenen. Balcon aan de achterzijde. Cordonlijst boven winkelpuien loopt door over zijgevels. Verder een enkel venster.

Description
Freestanding building block with three shop-dwellings. Purmerplein 16 and 20 have a shop layout of type D; Purmerplein 18 has a shop layout of type E. Built on a composite ground plan with a ground floor containing shops and warehouses and on the upper storey and attic storey the residential units, largely executed in brick. On both sides an oriel accentuates the gateway function. The building block has a gabled roof covered with red Dutch tiles and ridge tiles. On the front elevation the roof face is interrupted by a continuous series of wooden roof dormers with horizontal boarding and simple moulding and flat roof. On the ridge brickwork chimneys with corbelling and erected caps for the flue channels.
The front façade, adjoining the Purmerplein, contains various shop fronts; above a low plinth are large shop windows between wooden posts. The entrances are recessed and accessible by means of a simple stoep consisting of a slightly raised slab. In the portico also the water drainage of the broad soffit which runs continuously providing extra shelter to the shopping public.
Across the full width a continuous window strip with horizontal boarding. On both sides a three-sided enclosure on the upper storey and attic storey. On the corners the standing dentil patterns of interlocking bricks. On the upper storey on each side a window. On the third storey the windows are set back with an angled transition to the façade plane. Further some accents in brick.
Simple broad gutter moulding closes off the façade.
The side façades show at the top the extended base of the chimney, as a decorative element combined with a horizontal brick accent. Below the stone drip moulding haakse-bonded bricks. Balcony on the rear side. Cordon moulding above shop fronts runs through over side façades. Further a single window.
