Omschrijving

Description

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT. The early 19th-century garden layout in landscape style was presumably designed by members of the Zocher family. The strongest feature of the landscape design of Duinvliet is the fan-shaped sight axis from the house over lawn and pond towards the Domburgseweg, and from this public road over the broad lawn towards the house. The other principal characteristics of the landscape design are the large "hand-mirror"-shaped pond, which is situated across the width of the grounds to the west of the drive, close against the northern boundary of the park, and the "bean"-shaped island located within it; also visually determining is the drive, which leads from the Domburgseweg in a quarter-circle form to the front facade of the main building; the lawn accentuates the location of the pond, the drive and the house; to the north of the villa the lawn is arranged in a half-circle, to the south of the main building lies a lawn in an elongated triangular form and to the west of the house a lawn in diamond form with a rectangular extension towards the orchard; the sight axes from the main building run in many directions: towards the northeast over the lawn along the drive in the direction of the gate, towards the north over the narrow part of the pond, towards the northwest over the widening of the pond and the Empire footbridge towards the island, in a southwesterly direction towards a lawn with tree avenues there, and in southwesterly and southern directions over lawns with tree avenues. The layout furthermore features notably well-maintained circular walks, the most important of which is that with broad paths around the broadest part of the pond on the south and west sides of the pond; a longer circular walk leads over a narrower path in an oval form from the pond westwards through a wood planted chiefly with poplars (B 20th century); this path then connects in a straight line to a path with on the left varied tree species such as among others beech, lime, poplar, alder, and on the right: alder, oak, elm and willow; this path leads the walker back to the west side of the house; towards the south the circular walk follows from this junction at right angles a path along an orchard and vegetable garden, which are bounded on the south and west sides by a watercourse and a coppice bank; recently a hornbeam has been planted on the south side of the vegetable garden; from the vegetable garden a narrow path again leads through the wood with varied planting directly back to the lawn south of the house; a second path follows as part of the long circular walk the narrow south side of the lawn behind the house and runs in a broad loop over the rectangular wooded part of the grounds that connects to the public road behind it (Bijenkotsweg), to lead thence again in undulating line back to the house; this rectangular part is planted with a wood chiefly with elm, but also beech, alder and oak (B 20th century); on the southeast side of the house this loop-shaped path connects to a path through a small wood with among others beech (B 20th century) situated to the east of the house.

Along the drive stands a score of lime trees (B 20th century). In the place of the now vanished garden pavilion stands a small wood, arising from regrowth; on the lawn to the north of the house near the drive a dozen coniferous trees (B 20th century); near the pond a group of six hawthorns (B 20th century); on the west side of the house a group of trees with yew, oak, aspen and conifers (20th century); on the south side of the pond oak (B 20th century) and two aspens (A 20th century) and a poplar (B 20th century). On the island regrowth of acacia, oak, alder, birch, beech and maple, a number of bald cypresses as well as shrubs, conifers and limes; the central part is densely planted, at the edges the trees are mostly free-standing. From the lawn in front of the house one can reach the island over the Empire footbridge and there follow a walk along the shore.

Along the north, northwest and southwest sides of the orchard and vegetable garden are remnants of watercourses, which together form a triangle, one long side of which continues - behind the house - to a watercourse in the small wood on the east side.
