Omschrijving
Inleiding
Het 'Watergemaal A.F.

Description
Introduction
The 'Watergemaal A.F. Stroink' was built in 1919-1920 on behalf of the Waterschap Vollenhove as the main steam pumping station for Noordwest-Overijssel. It is situated on the Ettenlandsch Kanaal which formed the connection between the Zuiderzee and the Beulakerwijde. In 1928 a third steam engine was added to the original two machines of the pumping station, for which the building was extended on the south side. Later the steam engines were replaced by diesel motors, one of which was succeeded by an electric motor in 1982. In 1980 the tall chimney, which also functioned as an important 'landmark', was demolished.
Description
The pumping station is housed in a large building with hipped roofs covered in tiles. The tall central section with exposed timber roof truss structure and the lower north wing with lowered ceiling form the original structural components from 1919-1920. Their façades are articulated by means of pilasters. Those of the central structural component are strongly profiled and placed diagonally at the corners. The front of the building is dominated by three large wood pump pipes, which are connected to the two diesel motors in the central structural component and the electric motor in the right-hand section. The pipes are framed with brick-built semicircular arches with decorative bond patterns. On the rear side the tall central section has two rectangular windows beneath segmental discharge arches.
The added section with an open roof truss structure executed in steel has three rows of steel windows on the rear side. In the south façade and the adjoining wall commemorative stones from 1919 and 1928 are placed. Beneath the eaves is a series of ten small windows.
The pumping station is largely in its original state with a tiled floor and interior walls that are clad with glazed tiles. The dividing wall with arcade is the external wall of the first building phase.
Valuation
The pumping station, situated on the dyke between Vollenhove and Blokzijl, is visually dominant in the landscape due to its striking appearance. Little has changed to the building since the extension of 1928-'29, whereby it can be qualified as intact. It is of cultural-historical value as an expression of technical developments in the field of water engineering works and as a key project in the land reclamation and drainage projects in the Land of Vollenhove. It is also of architectural-historical significance in various respects and, despite the loss of the chimney, an attractive example both interior and exterior of early twentieth century utilitarian architecture. By virtue of its size and capacity the pumping station also possesses some rarity value.
