Inleiding
In 1676 werden bij de havenkolk, op de hoek van de Wortelmarkt en de Brouwerstraat twee huizen ingericht als weeshuis. Deze werden in 1873 vervangen door het Prins Maurits Weeshuis dat tot 1928 de oorspronkelijke functie behield. Daarna is het tot 1970 gebruikt als multifunctioneel verenigingsgebouw van de Nederlands Hervormde Kerk. Na functies als galerie en museum kreeg het de huidige functie.
Omschrijving
Het betreft een met de voorgevel naar de straat gekeerd hoekpand met verdieping onder een met Hollandse pannen gedekt schilddak. Het pand heeft een vijf-assige, symmetrische voorgevel met gepleisterde plint en een middenrisaliet met originele, dubbele deur met bovenlicht in een rondboog portiek met datumsteen en een hardstenen stoep. Aan weerszijden van en boven de entree bevinden zich rondboogvensters waarvan de bogen, evenals die van het portiek, zijn geaccentueerd met uitgemetselde gele baksteen. De verdiepingsvensters hebben een licht getoogde rollaag. Het fries tussen begane grond en etage is samengesteld uit cordonlijsten met daartussen gepleisterde velden en baksteenmozaïeken. De gevel wordt bekroond door een entablement met kraagstukken aan de bovenhoeken van het risaliet. De rechter kopgevel is voorzien van vensters die in de vormgeving stroken met die in de voorgevel. Aanbouw aan achterzijde. De linker kopgevel is voorzien van slechts één gevelopening op de begane grond.
Van het oorspronkelijke interieur is na een ingrijpende verbouwing in 1928 en diverse aanpassingen vanaf 1970 vrijwel niets meer over. Alleen het trappenhuis is nog intact.
Waardering
Dit voormalige weeshuis is vanwege zijn oorspronkelijke functie zowel zeldzaam als van belang voor de geschiedenis van Blokzijl en heeft derhalve cultuurhistorische waarde. Het pand bevindt zich nog in vrij gave staat en is een fraai voorbeeld van een eclectische architectuur die de representativiteit van dit openbare gebouw bepaalt. Het is van groot stedenbouwkundig belang vanwege de situering op een belangrijke hoek in de kom van Blokzijl.

Introduction
In 1676 two houses were set up as an orphanage at the harbour dock, on the corner of the Wortelmarkt and the Brouwerstraat. These were replaced in 1873 by the Prins Maurits Orphanage which retained its original function until 1928. After that it was used until 1970 as a multifunctional meeting hall of the Dutch Reformed Church. Following uses as a gallery and museum it acquired its present function.
Description
This is a corner building with its front facade facing the street with an upper storey beneath a hipped roof covered with Dutch tiles. The building has a five-bay, symmetrical front facade with rendered plinth and a central projection with an original, double door with fanlight in a round-arch porch with date stone and hardstone stoep. On either side of and above the entrance are round-arch windows, the arches of which, like those of the porch, are accentuated with raked-out yellow facing brick. The upper-storey windows have a slightly segmental roll-moulding. The frieze between ground floor and first floor is composed of cordon mouldings with rendered fields and brick mosaics between them. The facade is crowned by an entablature with corbels at the upper corners of the projection. The right gable end is furnished with windows which in their form accord with those in the front facade. Addition on the rear side. The left gable end is furnished with only a single window opening on the ground floor.
Of the original interior, after a major alteration in 1928 and various adaptations from 1970 onwards, virtually nothing remains. Only the stairwell is still intact.
Valuation
This former orphanage on account of its original function is both rare and of significance for the history of Blokzijl and therefore has cultural-historical value. The building is still in reasonably good state of preservation and is a fine example of eclectic architecture which determines the representativeness of this public building. It is of great urban design importance on account of its situation on an important corner in the centre of Blokzijl.
