Inleiding
In een Eclectische bouwstijl omstreeks 1860 in opdracht van dhr. Van Melsen gebouwd LANDHUIS. Het landhuis is fraai gesitueerd in een parkachtige tuin met gazons en boomgroepen.
Aan de linkerzijgevel werd omstreeks 1960 een orangerie aangebouwd, een betonconstructie met glaspanelen, deze is uitgesloten van bescherming.
De bijbouwen op het terrein zijn eveneens uitgesloten van bescherming.
Omschrijving:
Het landhuis heeft een in de lengterichting geplaatste rechthoekige plattegrond telt twee bouwlagen en wordt afgedekt met een schilddak met leien. Het torengedeelte in de achtergevel telt drie bouwlagen onder een afgeplat tentdak met leien.
Het toegepaste bouwmateriaal is mergel. Plint in hardsteen.
Rechthoekige houten vensters met roedeverdeling. Enkele rondboogvormige houten venstertjes.
Middendeel frontgevel iets vooruitspringend en uitlopend in een neo-barok geveltje. In dit geveldeel in de eerste bouwlaag hardstenen kolommen met hierop een balkon met smeedijzeren balustrade. Deze vroegere entreepartij thans in gebruik als serre. Neo-classicistische elementen in de decoraties o.a. in de rondboogvormige vulstukken van de vensters en de overige omlijstingen van vensters en deuren. Boogfriezen onder de dakrand. De afgeplatte torenspits voorzien van een ijzeren balustrade.
Aan de rechterzijgevel een aanbouw in een bouwlaag met trapgeveltje en zadeldak. Aan de rechterzijgevel tevens een aanbouw van een veranda met hierop een terras met smeedijzeren balustrade.
Smeedijzeren windvaan. Decoratieve smeedijzeren muurankers.
Van het INTERIEUR is van belang: de herenkamer met eikenhouten vloer; haardomlijsting in witte marmer; pianokamer met eikenhouten vloer en haardomlijsting in marmer, in deze kamer tevens vier glas-in-lood panelen van glazenier Henri Pieters uit 1943.
Aan de linkerzijgevel een na-oorlogse aanbouw van een orangerie.
Waardering:
Het landhuis Strabeek 54 is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een typologische ontwikkeling. Het landhuis bezit architectuurhistorische waarden wegens het bijzondere belang voor de bovenregionale geschiedenis van de architectuur, wegens de esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp, de toepassing van mergel als bouwmateriaal en de ornamentiek. Ensemblewaarde ontleent het landhuis aan de situering en daarmee van betekenis voor het aanzien van dit deel van Valkenburg aan de Geul. Het landhuis is tenslotte van algemeen belang wegens de redelijke mate van architectonische gaafheid van het exterieur en een deel van het interieur en de typologische zeldzaamheid.
