Inleiding
Met elementen van de Neo-Gotiek rond 1904 naar een ontwerp van architect C.J.H. Franssen gebouwde ROOMS KATHOLIEKE KERK ter ere van de Heilige Catharina. De kerk is op een breed plateau in de heuvel gelegen.
Omschrijving
De driebeukige basiliek telt vijf traveeën, een koor van twee traveeën en een driezijdige sluiting en een vierkante westtoren met ingesnoerde naaldspits en is geheel in baksteen opgetrokken. De daken zijn gedekt met leien, de dakranden zijn met zink bekleed. Slechts de waterlijsten, afzaten en profielen zijn van hardsteen, de gootlijst en de traceringen van de spitsboogvensters zijn van mergel. De kerk is geheel overwelfd met kruisribgewelven rustend op schalken. De westelijke traveeën van de zijbeuken zijn afgeschuind. Een doopkapel en een traptoren, beide op zeszijdige plattegrond, zijn aan weerszijden van de toren gebouwd. Aan de westzijde van het koor is de sacristie gebouwd, gedekt door een driezijdig zadeldak, en aan de oostzijde van het koor is een verwarmingshok, in een bouwlaag en met een plat dak gebouwd. Spitsboogvormige vensters met glas-in-lood en met een omlijsting in mergel. Rechthoekige houten deur met ijzerbeslag. Klokkenstoel met klok van P. Bisschops, 1814, diam. 99 cm.
Het interieur is nog grotendeels authentiek. De biechtstoelen zijn in uitbouwen tussen de steunberen ondergebracht. Van het INTERIEUR zijn onder meer van belang : het hoofdaltaar, beide zijaltaren, communiebanken, preekstoel, kerkbanken, orgeltribune en de meeste beelden daterend uit de bouwtijd. In het koor zijn vijf gebrandschilderde vensters, met scènes uit leven en lijden van Christus en het leven van Maria, uit het atelier van de gebroeders Nicolas te Roermond, deze dateren uit ca. 1905. De kerk heeft een deels originele plavuizenvloer. Maria-altaar en Catharina-altaar zijn uitgevoerd in hout. De kruiswegstaties zijn eveneens in hout uitgevoerd maar dateren uit ca. 1966 en zijn vervaardigd door Gène Eggen. Het houten Barbarabeeld is van oudere datum.
Tegen de buitengevel van de kerk staan twee grafkruisen (uit resp. 1630 en 1832) en op de helling van de heuvel aan de Catharinastraat staat een grafmonument van de familie Schoenmaeckers uit 1858.
Waardering
De H. Catharinakerk van Ulestraten is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een geestelijke ontwikkeling. De parochiekerk bezit architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege haar belang voor de regionale geschiedenis van de architectuur, als voorbeeld van het oeuvre van architect C.J.H. Franssen en vanwege de esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp. De kerk bezit ensemblewaarde op grond van haar situering op een breed plateau in een heuvel in de kern Ulestraten. The three-aisled basilica comprises five bays, a choir of two bays and a three-sided termination and a square west tower with tapering spire and is entirely constructed in brickwork. The roofs are covered with slate, the roof edges are clad with zinc. Only the drip mouldings, plinths and profiles are of ashlar, the gutter moulding and the traceries of the pointed arch windows are of marl. The church is entirely vaulted with cross-ribbed vaults resting on corbels. The western bays of the side aisles are chamfered. A baptistry and a stair tower, both on a six-sided plan, are built on either side of the tower. On the west side of the choir the sacristy is built, covered by a three-sided gabled roof, and on the east side of the choir a heating room, built as one storey with a flat roof. Pointed arch-shaped windows with stained glass and with a moulding in marl. Rectangular wooden door with iron fittings. Bell cote with bell by P. Bisschops, 1814, diam. 99 cm.
The interior is still largely authentic. The confessionals are housed in structures between the buttresses. Of the INTERIOR are among other things of importance: the high altar, both side altars, communion rails, pulpit, church pews, organ tribune and most of the sculptures dating from the time of construction. In the choir are five stained glass windows, with scenes from the life and passion of Christ and the life of Mary, from the workshop of the brothers Nicolas in Roermond, these date from approximately 1905. The church has a partly original tiled floor. Mary altar and Catharina altar are executed in wood. The Stations of the Cross are likewise executed in wood but date from around 1966 and were made by Gène Eggen. The wooden Barbara sculpture is of earlier date.
Against the exterior facade of the church stand two grave crosses (from 1630 and 1832 respectively) and on the slope of the hillside at the Catharinastraat stands a grave monument of the Schoenmaeckers family from 1858.
