Inleiding

Introduction

The DWELLING HOUSE of carpenter-contractor J. Mellema was designed and executed by himself in reinforced concrete. The house is dated above the balcony: ANNO 1911. The linear ornamentation and typography of the dating inscription of the dwelling house show affinity with Art Nouveau. Mellema emigrated to the United States for some time, where he worked in construction and became familiar with building in concrete. After his return to Marrum, to continue his father's business, he built two houses according to the principles learned in Florida. The first dwelling house was for himself on the business premises; the second dwelling house from 1912, at Lage Herenweg 60, was for the notary. Of the two properties, Mellema's own dwelling house is structurally the least altered; the fairly recently constructed barn falls outside the protection of the national heritage register.

Description

The dwelling house has a fairly square plan with a contemporary extension at the rear. The building consists of two storeys under a flat roof; the extension of the first storey is under a lean-to roof. On the roof edge stands a concrete balustrade between several simply decorated pilasters. The entire building is constructed in reinforced concrete with a finish consisting of overpainted thin rendering. The openings in the facade walls are distinguished per storey: on the first storey virtually all openings are under a straight imitation lintel and on the second storey under an arched imitation eyebrow arch. The windows are almost all sash windows. The front facade is two bays wide: the left section is determined by a three-sided bay window with a rectangular balcony; the short and slanted sides of the bay window have a triangular extension against the balcony and facade. The fanlights of the bay windows have coloured leaded lights. The balcony balustrade has an inverted segmental arch, in which an iron railing is incorporated. The balcony door with fanlight and side lights is clamped between pilasters, which form a continuation of the balcony edge.

The pilasters are topped with spheres. Between the pilasters lie brown glazed Tuile-du-Nord tiles as covering of the breastwork on the roof edge with the inscription: ANNO 1911. The right section of the front facade has on the first storey a single-light window, and on the upper floor a three-light window. On the cut-off corner two H-windows; the facade is finished with a closed balustrade with Tuile-du-Nord roof tiles between pilasters. On the northern side facade the facade projects forward: in the corner is the entrance under a concrete canopy, which is supported by a wooden column on the landing of a three-step concrete staircase. The entrance has a wooden panelled door with faceted panes. All H-windows in the extension have four-light fanlights. On the flat roof, formerly a balcony, stand five pilasters with iron railings between them. On the rear facade an extension with a rear entrance. The windows and door in the rear facade of the extension are cut through by the later extension. On the second floor two H-windows and two small single-light windows are arranged symmetrically. The south facade of the dwelling house has two H-windows on the first and second storey.

The dwelling house is internally structurally almost entirely original. All inner walls and the floor structure are of reinforced concrete. Among the valuable INTERIOR components are in particular the central hall with flights of stairs and landings executed in terrazzo work. The door of the draught lobby has a sandblasted representation with calla lilies. In the living room is a marble fireplace with the inscription: "There is no place like home". In various rooms are the original door frames and fixed cupboard walls. In the storage room lies a tile floor and there is a terrazzo sink. At the approach to the business premises stand two concrete posts on either side which are also protected.

Assessment

The concrete dwelling house from 1911 is of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical value:

- because of the high degree of importance as a particular expression of a technical development,

- because of the reasonable degree of importance because of its innovative value, namely building in concrete, which at this time was certainly pioneering,

- because of the high degree of importance for the history of building technology, in particular for that of concrete construction,

- because of the reasonable degree of aesthetic quality of the design and ornamentation,

- because of the high degree of architectural integrity of the exterior and interior,

- because of the high degree of typological rarity,

- because of the high degree of rarity due to the use of material, combined with the year 1911.
