Inleiding

Introduction

The ornately decorated RESIDENTIAL HOUSE was built in 1908 in the Transitional style. The residential house was designed on commission for Mr. Pieter Pieters Hoogland from Ferwert and built by contractor Miedema from Marrum. The designer is not known; however, it is noteworthy that there are similarities, both in architectural aspects and in the interior detailing, with houses in Dokkum (Stationsstraat 29 and Oostersingel 40 respectively). Nevertheless, the design could also be by the (municipal) architect J.K. van Dijk. The residential house is set far back from the street and has a deep front garden; the former deep back garden was cut off by the construction of the ring road around Ferwerd. The property was presumably somewhat altered in the 1950s: among other things, by the insertion of a new single-glazed side and rear window. Compared to the original situation (photograph, circa 1910) the exterior has deteriorated over time, through removal of, among other things, the crowning element on the dormer above the main entrance, the balustrade of the dormer on the corner, the recent removal of the veranda, later conservatory. The wooden garage on the site next to the residential house is of subsidiary importance for national monument protection due to minor architectural value.

Description

The residential house has a fairly square floor plan with contemporary extensions; the layout of the residential house and roof plan is complex. The façades are constructed in brown brickwork with toothed joints and on a plastered plinth. The façades are enlivened by tectonic decorations in cream-coloured facing bricks and with red pressed bricks, such as the bands along the lower and upper gutter edge and the arched stretcher courses above the openings in the façade wall with closing and backing stones; the drum fields above the windows and doors have artificial stone panels. The façade walls are finished with a cordon and cornice-topped facade, which is divided into panels by gutter clamps and is differently decorated on each façade wall: on the front façade artificial stone panels; in the side façade inset facing brick crosses; the rear façade is not articulated by gutter clamps.

The compound roof is hipped; the roof tiles are covered with slate in Maas coverage. The front façade has a projecting entrance section in the centre, which is built up to a roof dormer. Plastered mirror surfaces are in the wall sections. The internal porch has a three-step landing in terrazzo work, in which a red runner is imitated; the walls have wall panelling with Art Nouveau tiles; the Neo-Renaissance folding door has wrought ironwork for the glass panels. A balcony with iron balustrade rests on the coping above the porch, supported on a wooden beam structure. To the left of the porch is a three-light window and to the right of the porch are two H-windows. The cut corner towards the south façade projects slightly and is terminated by a corner dormer with a saddle roof and half-hip. The roof overhang rests on columns of the low balustrade of the balcony, which rests on a wooden beam structure. On the roof slope on the south side stands a small wooden roof dormer with a crowned zinc spire. The cut corner towards the north façade contains an H-window with on the roof slope a small wooden roof dormer with a crowned zinc spire. The right side façade is blind and has on the roof slope a small wooden roof dormer with a crowned zinc spire. The rear façade is complex in composition due to façade offset and is partially overlapped by a contemporary, lower extension. In the façade offset on the north side is a side entrance in a shallow porch with a two-step landing of roughcast brick, a T-window next to the entrance and an H-window on the rear side. In the extension are on the rear and south sides two round iron ventilation windows and a side entrance.

The LAYOUT of the house is structurally well recognizable and consists of an L-shaped corridor with two living rooms, a kitchen and a scullery. Among the valuable INTERIOR components are the corridor with marble wall panelling, a segmental arch, stucco panels above the doors to both living rooms with symbolic representations of cattle raising and agriculture and the stuccowork on the ceiling with vases, fruit and musical instruments. Furthermore, a front room has a box bed and cupboard wall, a marble fireplace with tiled hearth section and a stuccoed breast; a stuccoed ceiling with the representation of a girl figure with butterfly wings holding up a parasol, opposite a boy figure with bird wings releasing three birds: together they sit on a cloud.

Valuation

The residential house in Transitional style from the first decade of this century is of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical value:

- as a characteristic example of the rich bourgeois houses in Transitional style in the province of Friesland,

- due to the reasonable degree of integrity of the architectural quality of the exterior and interior components,

- due to the high degree of importance through the special use of materials and ornamentation,

- due to the reasonable degree of importance of the object as an image-defining corner building on the approach road to Ferwerd.
