Inleiding

Introduction

According to oral tradition, the DWELLING HOUSE WITH WAREHOUSE was built in 1913 at the instruction of Mr Holwerda, who operated a potato and grain trading business from the premises. The double building in Transitional Architecture style is located on the Hoofdstraat and formerly had access to the fields at the rear. The building has been altered internally, but the structure has remained largely recognisable. To the left of the house stands a garage built in the 1930s for the transport vehicle: this is of subordinate importance for national monument protection.

Description

The dwelling house and warehouse are connected by a solid wall but are distinguishable in their design, with connecting elements employed such as material treatment and detailing. The dwelling house consists of one storey with an attic storey under a gabled roof, covered with brown glazed Tuile du Nord tiles; the warehouse consists of two storeys under a flat roof on a slope with an extension at the rear. The whole is constructed in brown brickwork, enlivened with yellow brickwork for the tectonic decorations, such as bands on the dwelling house and string courses on the dwelling house and warehouse. All window and door openings in the front and side facades are under a lintel with simple linear relief and thereon a yellow brick string course the width of the opening in the facade wall; a lintel is absent from the openings in the rear facade. On the front facade of the dwelling house a three-sided bay under zinc capping: two H-windows and a three-light window, all with multiple-pane fanlights and yellow-tinted frosted glass under a lintel and string course; brown glazed brick drip moulds. To the right of the bay an embedded porch under a lintel with string course, a terrazzo step and a door matching the window glazing pattern. In the gable top a three-light window, a so-called milkmaid window, under a lintel and string course. The facade is concluded by a rendered cornice-topped facade with four pilasters, both at the base and at the top. The pilasters have a rendered, flower-bud-shaped capital. Between the top pilasters a built balustrade as facade termination. The pilaster on the left corner is identical to that on the right corner of the warehouse: both with a dice-shaped base. In the western side facade of the dwelling house among other things a T-window with a multiple-pane fanlight and yellow-tinted frosted glass. In the north facade of the dwelling house a four-light window and multiple-pane fanlights with yellow-tinted frosted glass, under an arched string course and cut slate. In the gable top a two-light window and three-pane fanlights under an arched string course. The front facade of the warehouse is symmetrically laid out and soberly detailed. The central axis is emphasised by the doors placed one above the other and the raised facade termination between projecting pilasters, between which a built parapet. In the centre a double barn door, above it a hayloft door; both under a lintel and string course. On either side of the door openings in both storeys an iron multiple-pane window with arched top under a lintel and string course; yellow brick drip mould. The facade is concluded by a rendered facade termination, which rises towards the centre of the building block, between pilasters. The left side facade is three window bays deep with three iron multiple-pane windows with arched top under a lintel with string course in both storeys. The rear facade is partially cut across by a contemporary extension, formerly a workshop, with a publicly accessible urinal on the corner, now storage. In the extension are three T-windows and a rear door. In the rear facade of the warehouse two iron windows with arched top under a string course of yellow brickwork.

The internal structure has remained recognisable: a corridor in the middle with the residential part on the left side and the business part on the right side. From the corridor a small office is accessible with a counter. The warehouse was originally three-aisled and was separated by I-section iron beams, marked: HOERDE 18. Two of the five columns are still present. The internal walls of the warehouse are rendered with Portland cement. Via a staircase in the corner opposite the counter one reaches the upper storey.

Valuation

The dwelling house with warehouse which under Transitional Architecture would have been built in 1913 is of general cultural-historical value:

- as a particular expression of a socio-economic development, in particular as a trading establishment closely connected with the agricultural surroundings,

- as a representative of the local economic activities in the Frisian villages,

- on account of the reasonable degree of aesthetic quality of the design, whereby the functional distinction is formally emphasised, while unity is achieved in material treatment and detailing,

- on account of the significance of the object for the streetscape,

- on account of the reasonable degree of intactness of the double building.
