Inleiding

Introduction

The spacious VILLA Zonneheuvel on the Zuiderbolwerk was designed in Interwar architecture in 1933 by T. Venstra Ozn. in Dokkum for S. Bouma, director of the nearby former cigar factory annex wholesale trade. The former cigar factory, located in the warehouse de Nijverheid, is a national monument (number 13184). On the north side the property borders the Grootdiep; on the south side it offers a view over the Woudpoortsgracht. In 1965 the site was partially excavated to make a garage in the storage under the round conservatory. The contemporary boundary fence, designed by T. Venstra Ozn., is part of the protected object. In the detailing, in particular through the replacement of the window frames on the north side, the relief of the facade has become somewhat impoverished.

Description

The villa has a complex floor plan, which reflects the functional layout of the property: the large building volume with two full storeys perpendicular to the canals contains the living and sleeping rooms of the main occupants; in the eastern subsidiary building are the small bedrooms and the functional rooms. On the west side a simple conservatory with covered terrace has been added. The dwelling house has three storeys: a basement, a piano nobile and a first floor, partly in the roof; the floor between the basement and the piano nobile is of reinforced concrete. The facades are cavity walls, built in yellow bricks on a substructure of dark brown clinker bricks, with recessed mortar joint and flush mortar joint. The window openings are almost all designed as three-light window or ribbon window under a roll moulding. The complex roof has a generous overhang with a round, zinc gutter and is laid with hipped improved Dutch tiles and on the semicircular projection with ceramic roof tiles. The south facade has in the main volume a three-sided bay window over two storeys; below the windows of the second storey hangs a wooden flower box. On the wall in mosaic tilework hangs, executed in wrought iron, the name of the house. In the subsidiary building is the entrance with varnished panel door under the concrete floor of a balcony with a brick balustrade and iron railing with knobs. To the right of the door a letterbox, which like the sides of the door frame is executed in a granite type. On the west side is the kitchen under a half-hipped roof with its own entrance and corner window. Against the west facade is the chimney, beside which on the first floor a vertical two-light window is. The north facade is strongly dominated by the semicircular projection over two storeys and the large roof plane of the subsidiary building. In the basement a four-light ribbon window and an access door to the former workshop. On the piano nobile is a concrete balcony, which runs almost entirely along the entire north facade. In the subsidiary building two three-light windows and in the roof panel a roof dormer of the former maid's bedroom with well-burned wood. The semicircular projection has a ribbon window on the piano nobile and on the first floor an open balcony with brick balustrade under the semicircular roof, which rests on concrete columns. In the rectilinearly closed facade a double balcony door and sidelights. The western side facade is partially intersected by the conservatory with covered terrace under a concrete slab. The concrete floor of the terrace is floored with hard-fired tiles. The breast wall and corners are mortared, otherwise it consists of glass panels. On the second storey on the west side two three-light windows with coloured leaded glass. On the roof panel a wooden cabin with three-light window. The internal structure of the villa is recognizable. The site of the villa is surrounded on three sides by a contemporary garden wall. The garden wall is mortared in dark brown clinker bricks, with pilasters between which an iron pipe. The garden gates are of iron and have a simple welded decoration.

Assessment

The villa which was built in Interwar architecture to the design of T. Venstra Ozn. from 1933, is of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical value:

- on account of the historical-functional relation to the warehouse de 'Nijverheid',

- as an exemplary example of Interwar architecture, - on account of the high degree of aesthetic and functional quality of the design,

- on account of the high degree of architectural integrity of the exterior of the villa with site boundary on the Zuiderbolwerk,

- as a character-defining property on the Zuiderbolwerk, within the protected townscape.
