Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
CHURCH BUILDING with integrated dwelling. The church building, established for the poor, was founded in 1861 by the patrician family Snouck van Loosen in a seventeenth-century warehouse in its core that the family owned. The conversion into a church building was, according to the stone plaque on the front (West), carried out by A.J. and D. van der Molen, who also provided the building with the current front facade in eclectic style. The church building is situated on the east side of the Breedstraat. The north side of the building is built directly against the neighbouring property at number 45.
Description
Church building on a rectangular plan with integrated dwelling on the rear side (East). The building consists of ground floor, first floor and attic storey. The church hall on the ground floor has a crawl space over its full length. The dwelling, as well as the adjoining conservatory, is partially cellared. Dwelling and other spaces are internally connected. The building has a truncated hipped roof with predominantly red Dutch tiles; only the roof slope on the front (West) is covered with black cross tiles. The truncated section of the hipped roof has a wooden cornice all around. On both the front (West) and rear side (East) the hipped roof is pierced by a roof dormer.
On the far right of the rear side (East) is a chimney running through all three storeys. The square chimney is constructed of red brick.
The brickwork is built from both yellow and red brick. The front (West) and right side (South) are constructed in red brick and the rear side (East) is constructed in yellow brick. In various places in the brickwork of the right side (South) and rear facade (East), the stretchers of ornamental wall anchors are visible.
The symmetrical front facade (West), built on a natural stone plinth, consists of three facade sections, including a slightly projecting central risalit. The facade sections each contain one window axis. The central window axis in the central risalit with rendered surround has on the ground floor a double panel door with round arch and spandrel with fanlight in the rose window. The door, flanked on either side by a colonette with caryatid, is reached via a step-like natural stone stoop with railings anchored in the front facade. On the first floor the axis has a round arch window with spandrel and on the attic storey the axis continues in the four-pane casement window of the aforementioned roof dormer. The roof dormer has brick sides, a flat roof and a wooden wing on either side. The left and right axes have windows on both ground floor and first floor, which in design are identical to the first floor window with rendered surround of the central risalit. The windows on the ground floor do not have, unlike the first floor windows in the spandrel a shell motif with allegorical figures, but have a spandrel with rose window. The four-pane casement windows on ground floor and first floor have natural stone drip moulds. The decoration on the front consists further of among other things a number of natural stone details, a cornice with round arch frieze and cornice separating first floor and attic storey and a cordon moulding separating ground floor and first floor and also crowning the adjoining garden wall. The garden wall is situated to the right side of the front facade and has a plinth, pilasters at the ends and a centrally placed panel door with round arch and spandrel with rose window.
The right side (South) has on the left of the ground floor three sash windows with original six-pane glazing bars and on the far right a large format window. The first floor has four original sash windows with six-pane glazing bars and a sash window on the far right. The windows on the right side (South) have natural stone under-drip moulds.
The rear side (East) has a conservatory on the left of the ground floor. The conservatory has a brick base and a structure of wood and window glass. To the right of the conservatory is a wooden door with a nine-pane glazing bar glass panel. To the right of the door, which is reached via a step, is a two-part opening window with two-pane fanlight. On the first floor are four sash windows with eight-pane glazing bars and wooden shutters on either side. All windows and the door on the ground floor are placed under a stretcher executed in red brick.
Appraisal
The church building with integrated dwelling is of general significance from an architectural and cultural-historical perspective as a well-preserved example from 1861 of a church building for the less well-off established by a patrician family, as an example of nineteenth-century reuse of an older building and as an example of the architecture of A.J. and D. van der Molen.
