Inleiding

Introduction

Two WORKERS' DWELLINGS under one roof on a rectangular plan, 1920-1921. Constituting component of the social housing complex Schildersplein and surroundings, situated immediately behind the middle-class dwellings on the Franciscus Romanusweg. Built in the style of the Amsterdam School to a design by the Amsterdam architects Z. Gulden and J. Geldmaker, commissioned by the socialist Housing Association Beter Wonen in Maastricht. The dwellings were renovated in 1987. Extensions and outbuildings realised since 1921 are excluded from protection.

Description

Two workers' dwellings situated to the south-east in the housing complex Schildersplein, of one storey plus attic floor and loft space on a rectangular plan.

The whole is covered by a broken hipped roof with red Dutch tiles renewed in 1987. The roof dormers on the roof slopes have either a renewed rectangular wooden window frame with vertical glazing bars, or two renewed rectangular wooden window frames separated by a partition. The original cross-shaped glazing bars have been removed from these dormer windows. Ridge chimney. The tall chimneys on the side roof slopes have been shortened or removed. The roof gutters on brackets are now clad with trespa, the original ridge ornaments have been removed.

Symmetrical front facade with centrally placed entrance section. This entrance section originally took the form of a porch with two rectangular wooden panel doors with fanlight, mutually separated by a partition wall for which a pair of columns on brick basement. These columns carried, as it were, the concrete lintel above the entire porch. Currently the entrance section is entirely placed in line with the building line, the panel doors have been replaced and the wall surface remaining between the doors has been provided with simple boarding.

On either side of the entrance section one renewed, vertically divided rectangular wooden window, replacing the original rectangular wooden cross windows with vertically divided upper windows.

The side facades of these double workers' dwellings were originally provided with two coupled square wooden 4-pane windows.

The rear facades are mutually mirrored and were provided property-wise with a centrally placed rectangular wooden door with side light and small glazing bars in the glass panels. Beside it a rectangular double wooden room door with side lights. The glass panels of these were also provided with small glazing bars.

The double workers' dwelling is constructed in red nuanced brick, laid in running bond, on a vertically laid, height-varying plinth of tuff-coloured clinker bricks. Window lintels. Hardstone window sills.

Valuation

The workers' dwellings of the housing complex Schildersplein and surroundings are of cultural-historical importance as a very distinctive expression of a socio-economic and a typological development. The architectural-historical values are determined by the building style, the involvement of the architects Gulden and Geldmaker, by the aesthetic quality of their design and the use of materials. The dwellings form an essential component of the housing complex Schildersplein and surroundings, are by virtue of their location closely linked with the development of the city and are of particular significance for the appearance of the district. The double workers' dwelling is in architectural terms reasonably sound and of great importance for the structural and visual integrity of the built environment. The double dwelling is furthermore of importance by virtue of the high degree of architectural-historical and typological rarity, all this in a regional perspective and in relation to the relatively advanced age of the housing complex Schildersplein and surroundings.
