Inleiding

Introduction

Five MIDDLE-CLASS DWELLINGS in a street facade on an L-shaped plan, 1920-1921. Due to their location at the corner of the Franciscus Romanusweg and the Antonius Bieleveltstraat, these dwellings form a characteristic component of the social housing complex Schildersplein and its surroundings. Built in the style of the Amsterdam School according to a design by the Amsterdam architects Z. Gulden and J. Geldmaker, commissioned by the socialist Housing Association Beter Wonen in Maastricht. The whole was renovated in 1987 and the two corner buildings (Franciscus Romanusweg 5,6) were each divided into three residential units. As a result, the street facade in question currently contains nine residential units. The extensions and outbuildings realised since 1921 are excluded from protection.

Description

Street facade situated in the north-western part of the Schildersplein complex, comprising two storeys plus attic storey on an L-shaped plan. The two corner dwellings have mutually mirrored triangular plans, the remaining dwellings a rectangular plan.

The whole is covered by a flattened hipped roof with red Dutch tiles renewed in 1987. Both single and double roof dormers on the roof slopes. The single roof dormers have a renewed rectangular wooden window frame with double vertical glazing bars, the double roof dormers have twice two renewed rectangular wooden window frames with double vertical glazing bars, separated by an intermediate partition. The original cross-shaped glazing bars have been removed from all these windows. The gutter boards are clad with trespa. Recent attic windows.

Rhythmically articulated front facades, with triangular and round double bay windows between which the entrance sections are placed.

The front facades of Franciscus Romanusweg 3 and 4 are mutually mirrored. Two triangular double bay windows with renewed, in the second storey vertically subdivided rectangular wooden window frames, from which the original 8-pane glazing bars per glass panel have been removed.

Between both bay windows are placed the renewed house doors with fanlights. Slightly projecting, combined wooden side-light frame, without the original horizontal glazing bars, supported by a decoratively laid brick console. Above the entrance section, high beneath the gutter board, a double, slightly projecting wooden window frame, from which the original 6-pane glazing bars per glass panel have been removed.

The corner buildings Franciscus Romanusweg 5 and 6 are likewise mutually mirrored. Each building has three window bays on either side of a shared entrance section. This entrance section consists of two adjoining rectangular wooden doors with fanlights, above which beneath the gutter board is a double, slightly projecting wooden window frame. The entrance section is flanked on either side by two double round bay windows with vertically subdivided window frames.

Between the round corner bay windows and the triangular bay windows of the third window bay is one window bay with rectangular wooden windows. These windows are provided in the first storey with an asymmetrical vertical subdivision, in the second storey with a symmetrical, double vertical subdivision. All original windows and doors have been replaced, including the original small glazing bars.

The building Antonius Bieleveltstraat 38 has, with the exception of the double window and door side-light set high beneath the gutter board, the same front facade layout as Franciscus Romanusweg 3.

The side facades of this street facade were originally blind, that is, irregularly subdivided with three square wooden 4-pane windows.

The rear facades are provided panelwise with two window bays. In the first storey single and double wooden doors with side-lights, in the second storey rectangular wooden, two- and three-pane windows. These window and door frames were originally provided with small glazing bars.

The street facade is built of nuanced red brickwork, laid in running bond, on a vertically laid plinth of tuff-lime bricks.

Window and door lintels. Ashlar window sills.

Valuation

The middle-class dwellings of the housing complex Schildersplein and surroundings are of cultural-historical significance as a highly distinctive expression of a socio-economic and typological development. The architectural-historical values are determined by the building style, the involvement of the architects Gulden and Geldmaker, by the aesthetic quality of their design and the use of materials. The street facade is an essential component of the housing complex Schildersplein and surroundings, is due to its location closely linked with the development of the city and is of particular significance for the appearance of the city and neighbourhood. The street facade is in an architecturally sound condition to a reasonable degree and of great importance for the structural and visual integrity of the urban environment. The street facade is moreover of significance due to the high degree of architectural-historical and typological rarity, all in relation to the relatively high age of the housing complex Schildersplein and its surroundings
