Inleiding
BANKGEBOUW, 1915, in een door de Art Déco en het Berlagianisme beïnvloede stijl, gebouwd naar een ontwerp van architect J. Limburg uit Den Haag, in opdracht van de Geldersche Credietvereeniging. Het bankgebouw is gesitueerd in de gesloten wand van het Onze Lieve Vrouweplein. Het werd opgericht op een smal, langgerekt perceel dat tussen twee bestaande gebouwen lag ingeklemd. Dit resulteerde in een grillig vormgegeven plattegrond.
Het beeldhouwwerk aan de gevel van het pand is vervaardigd door de beeldhouwer J.C. Altorf. Kenmerkend voor diens oeuvre is het gebruik van dierenmotieven. De dierenfiguren aan de gevel zijn geassocieerd met de gebruiker van het pand: de Geldersche Credietvereeniging. De pelikaan op de top van de gevel symboliseert de moederliefde of moederzorg, d.w.z. de bescherming die de bankinstelling haar cliënten biedt. De twee rammen aan de linkerzijde van de gevel symboliseren wilskracht. De staande olifant aan de rechterzijde van de ingang is ontleend aan de Oosterse dierensymboliek. Het Gelders provinciewapen in het linker geveldeel symboliseert de oorsprong van de bankinstelling. Het glas- en raamwerk is ontworpen door de glazenier J.W. Gips uit Den Haag.
Omschrijving
Het voormalig bankgebouw heeft een grillig vormgegeven plattegrond, telt twee deels drie bouwlagen plus een souterrainverdieping en wordt afgedekt met een zadeldak met rode tuiles du nord. Twee dakkapellen.
Het toegepaste bouwmateriaal is zandsteen en hardsteen.
Rechthoekige houten deur met rondboogvormig glas in lood bovenlicht. In de eerste bouwlaag rechthoekige houten vensters met rondboogvormige bovenlichten met verticale roedeverdeling, tevens enkele kleine rechthoekige glas in lood venstertjes. In de tweede bouwlaag rechthoekige houten vensters met bovenlichten met 9-ruits roedeverdeling. Hardstenen dorpelstenen. Tussen alle vensters zijn halfzuilen aangebracht, versierd met stroken met een geometrisch motief.
Pand met asymmetrische lijstgevel, met aan de rechterzijde een dwars geplaatst bouwdeel met topgevel en aan de linkerzijde met een schijngevel, met een afgeschuinde hoek. In rechtergeveldeel de entree met aan de rechterzijde in de hardstenen plint een gestileerde olifant.
Boven de entree een reeks van vier gekoppelde glas in lood venstertjes.
Dit geveldeel uitlopend in een topgevel met hierin een reeks van vier gekoppelde rechthoekige venstertjes.
In het middendeel frontgevel in de tweede bouwlaag een uitgebouwd geveldeel op kraagstenen. In het afgeschuinde linker frontgeveldeel een kleine rechthoekige houten deur met aan de bovenzijde twee glas in lood venstertjes. In de tweede bouwlaag van dit geveldeel een balkon op kraagstenen met balustrade in zandsteen afgedekt met hardsteen. Aan de linkerzijde van het balkon een rechthoekig houten venster met een rondboogvormig bovenlicht. Linker frontgeveldeel uitlopend in een doorlopend geveldeel met hierin twee reeksen gekoppelde venstertjes. Dit geveldeel bekroond met hardstenen schouderstukken in de vorm van ramskoppen en een grote gestileerde pelikaan op de bovenste rand. In dit geveldeel is tevens het wapen van de provincie Gelderland afgebeeld.
Van het INTERIEUR is onder meer van belang: toegangsportaal met trap in bruine graniet en met koperen leuningen; deur naar vestibule met glas panelen en koper beslag en geflankeerd door twee smalle glas in lood ramen in een omlijsting van marmer. In de marmer halfzuilen uitgesneden. Aan bovenzijde deur een reeks van zes gekoppelde glas in lood venstertjes. In de vestibule toegangsdeur naar centrale hal met eveneens glas panelen, met rondboogvormig glas in lood bovenlicht en geflankeerd door twee glas in lood vensters. Aan het einde van de vestibule rechthoekige houten paneeldeuren geflankeerd door twee smalle glas in lood ramen in een omlijsting van marmer en met aan de bovenzijde een reeks van zes gekoppelde glas in lood venstertjes. Achter de vestibule trappenhuis met authentieke houten trap doorlopend tot de zolderverdieping.
Centrale hal gedecoreerd met marmeren zuilen voorzien van inscripties, geglazuurde baksteen en twee lichtkoepels. Rondbogen in gele baksteen en met hardstenen aanzetstenen. In de eerste bouwlagen diverse kamers met houten lambrisering en authentieke paneeldeuren. Lambrisering deels met houtsnijwerk. Trappenhuis naar souterrain met granito vloeren, smeedijzeren leuning met koperen armlegger. In het trappenhuis enkele glas in lood vensters. Aan het einde van de trap twee rondbogen in rood geglazuurde baksteen.
Sobere achtergevel in baksteen en met zes venstertraveeën. Twee balkons met smeedijzeren leuning.
Waardering
Het voormalig bankgebouw van de Geldersche Credietvereeniging bezit grote cultuurhistorische waarden als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische en typologische ontwikkeling. Architectuurhistorische waarden ontleent dit pand in zeer hoge mate aan het bijzondere belang voor de geschiedenis van de architectuur, als belangrijk voorbeeld van het oeuvre van architect J. Limburg, wegens de hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp, het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de ornamentiek en tenslotte wegens de bijzondere samenhang tussen het exterieur en een groot deel van het interieur.
Ensemblewaarden ontleent het pand aan de situering aan het Onze Lieve Vrouweplein: een plein dat cultuurhistorisch, architectuurhistorisch en stedenbouwkundig van nationaal belang is. Het pand vormt een onderdeel van het beschermd stadsgezicht Maastricht en daarmee van bijzondere betekenis voor het aanzien van de stad. BANK BUILDING, 1915, in a style influenced by Art Deco and Berlagian design, built to a design by architect J. Limburg from The Hague, commissioned by the Geldersche Credietvereeniging. The bank building is situated in the enclosed wall of the Onze Lieve Vrouweplein. It was erected on a narrow, elongated plot that was squeezed between two existing buildings.
