Inleiding
LAGERE SCHOOL in neo-renaissancestijl, 1913. De achtergevel is voorzien van kunststof puien. Aan de frontgevel is recentelijk een uitbreiding gerealiseerd op het niveau van de souterrainverdieping. De uitbreiding is uitgesloten van bescherming.
Omschrijving
De voormalige lagere school heeft een in dwarsrichting geplaatste rechthoekige plattegrond telt twee bouwlagen plus een souterrainverdieping en wordt afgedekt met zadeldaken met leien.
Dakkapellen met wolfseinde, nokpionnen en houten topgevelbeschot.
Bakgoten op consoles.
Het toegepaste bouwmateriaal is baksteen, hardsteen en mergel.
Gekoppelde hardstenen kruiskozijnen, in de trapgevels bekroond met rondboogvormige bovenlichten. Negenruits roedeverdeling per vensterkwartier. Rechthoekige houten deur met glaspanelen.
Symmetrisch schoolgebouw met langgerekte vleugels, twee bouwlagen in dwarsrichting. De zijvleugels verbinden het centrale bouwvolume, met hoofdingang, verdiepingserker en trapgevel, met twee dwarsgeplaatste hoekvolumes, eveneens voorzien van trapgevels. In trapgevel rechterdeel frontgevel bouwjaaraanduiding. Hardstenen plint.
De tussenvleugels hebben in elke bouwlaag twee reeksen zesvoudig gekoppelde hardstenen kruiskozijnen. De hoekvolumes zijn op de begane grond voorzien van een rechthoekige vensterreeks, in de tweede laag van een reeks met rondboogvormige bovenlichten.
Mergelstenen gootlijst op consoles, geprofileerde dakgoot op consoles.
De zijgevels zijn eveneens voorzien van gekoppelde hardstenen kruisvensters, aan de Lenculenstraat bovendien nog van een dichtgezet rondboogportiek.
In middendeel frontgevel de entree met hierboven in de tweede bouwlaag een houten erker met plat dak op een baksteen plint op consoles.
Waardering
De Toneelacademie is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een maatschappelijke en typologische ontwikkeling. Het pand is vanwege de bouwstijl van groot architectuurhistorisch belang, heeft hoge esthetische kwaliteiten en kent een opmerkelijke materiaalbehandeling en ornamentiek. De school is een zeer belangrijk object in de beschermde Maastrichtse binnenstad, is daarin prominent gesitueerd en levert een aanzienlijke bijdrage tot het aanzien van het omliggende stadsdeel.
Verder beschikt het gebouw over een hoge mate van gaafheid en is van groot belang in relatie tot de structurele en visuele gaafheid van de stedelijke omgeving. Bovendien is er sprake van een architectuurhistorische zeldzaamheidswaarde.
