Waardering

Introduction

Eclectic ENTRANCE SECTION OF THEATER, 1879; a large baroque THEATER HALL called the Bonbonnière, 1789, built up with early 18th century interior elements from the former riding school on the Jekerstraat; a small THEATER HALL in Louis XVI style, called the Redoute hall, 1789. Both theater halls are housed in the former Jesuit church behind the entrance section. This church, originally from the 17th century, has not only been provided with an entrance section in the 19th and 20th centuries, but has also been rebuilt and restored multiple times, both externally and internally.

Description

The ENTRANCE SECTION has a square floor plan, comprises two storeys and is covered by a hipped roof clad with zinc. Gutters on wooden consoles.

The facades of the entrance building are built of brick, the front facade and left side facade are provided with a limestone plinth and plasterwork.

The front facade has five window bays, the left side facade has three window bays, the right side facade is irregularly arranged.

In the first storey of the front facade and left side facade there are round-arched plastered window and door surrounds, in the second storey rectangular surrounds. Corner strips with block-shaped decorative plasterwork. Below the windows of the second storey a balustrade-like ornament.

In the first storey of the front facade and left side facade there are rectangular wooden windows and doors with round-arched fanlights. In the second storey rectangular wooden T-windows. In the left part of the left side facade a rectangular wooden door with above it three round windows. The right side facade is unplastered and has T-windows plus a rectangular wooden door of more recent date.

In the INTERIOR of the entrance section the following are noteworthy: on the first storey the café hall on the left with tall wooden panel doors, tall wooden wainscoting and a richly ornamented coffered ceiling. On the second storey the so-called White hall in which a monumental fireplace with fireplace surround in white marble and a flower garland motif; wooden panel doors and wainscoting; ceiling with decorative stucco; decorative wooden window surrounds and cornices.

In the INTERIOR of the former Jesuit church the following are noteworthy: the so-called Redoute hall on the first storey with wooden wall panelling, decorative stucco with festoons and other ornate ornaments. On the south side of the Redoute three so-called small cabinets, connected to the Redoute hall by means of round-arched passages. These small cabinets are interconnected by means of rectangular passages. In these small cabinets likewise wooden wainscoting and decorative stucco on walls and ceilings.

On the second storey the so-called Bonbonnière with two galleries and boxes; barrel vault with decorative stucco; on the left and right sides of the stage an honorary box with balcony, provided with a decorative wooden surround with segmental-arched pediment; ceiling painting by Charles Eyck from 1959.

Valuation

The entrance section and both theater halls are of cultural-historical value as a distinctive expression of a cultural and typological development. The theater - and particularly the interior - possesses supra-regional architectural-historical value because of the building style, the distinctive ornamental work and the coherence between exterior and part of the interior in the entrance section. The theater building derives ensemble value from its dominant situation within the protected townscape of Maastricht and is thus of importance for the character of the city. The building is moreover of general importance because of the architectural integrity of the interior. Furthermore, this interior possesses a high rarity value of supra-regional significance.
