Inleiding

Introduction

BREWERY BUILDING of Brewery De Ridder, 1929-1930, situated behind the closed-block development of the Oeverwal. Built on commission of Fa. Gebrs. van Aubel, according to a design by architect J. Joosten of Maastricht in businesslike expressionistic style. The concrete construction calculations are by ir. H. Huydts. The original stoking place on the west side has been demolished.

Various window and door frames have been replaced by aluminium frames or in a single case removed. The commercial buildings that now surround the originally free-standing brewery building, the largely modernised brewery installation and the facade advertising between the raised staircase building and the chimney are excluded from protection.

Description

The brewery building has five storeys on a rectangular ground plan in main form. On the north side a projecting staircase building of five storeys with a roof plane raised in relation to the main volume. The whole is covered by a flat roof with fascia gutters.

The entire brewery building is characterised by a profiled brick plinth and brick facades, laid in stretcher or random bond. Stepped brickwork in the corner sections, set and finished by concrete lintels.

Profiled concrete sills and lintels.

The appearance of the FRONT FACADE on the west side is dominated by the slightly projecting staircase building on the north-west side and by the profiled chimney rising far above roof level with an inset decorative brick cap on the south-west side. This chimney is fitted with a vertical profile moulding. In the staircase building, at the height of each landing, a rectangular horizontally-divided window. These windows together form a recessed series, which is set in the second storey with double concrete sills and finished in the fifth storey with a double concrete lintel.

In the facade plane between the staircase building and the chimney, centrally placed in the third, fourth and fifth storeys are rectangular window frames, five-fold vertically divided, with double horizontal glazing bars per pane and fitted with profiled concrete lintels and sills. In the second storey, to the right of the centre axis, a rectangular double cross window with profiled concrete lintel and concrete sill.

In the REAR FACADE on the east side rectangular window frames were placed in the second, third and fifth storeys, five-fold vertically divided, with single or double horizontal glazing bars per pane and fitted with profiled concrete lintels and sills. In the second storey the window frame is moreover fitted with two side lights. In the east facade of the staircase building again a recessed window series, identical to the series in the west facade.

The northern SIDE FACADE is irregularly divided. The facade of the staircase building is on this side, with the exception of a series with three horizontally-divided rectangular windows between continuous concrete lintels and sills, entirely blind. In the facade of the brewery building, in the angle with the projecting staircase building, in the second to fifth storeys, rectangular windows between a concrete sill and a concrete lintel. One window in this series has been removed and replaced by a double door. In the second storey there is moreover a double cross window, in the first storey a five-fold vertically-divided window, with single horizontal glazing bars per pane and fitted with profiled concrete lintels and sills.

In the southern SIDE FACADE one window row with rectangular, horizontally-divided windows between concrete lintel and concrete sill.

In the INTERIOR the brewing hall on the first floor is of importance, due to the yellow-blue-green tile wainscoting and the copper-finished balustrades.

Evaluation

The brewery building of Brewery De Ridder is of cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a socio-economic development. The brewery building illustrates the modernisation of a craft brewery to an industrial bottom-fermenting business in the first half of the twentieth century and is therefore a particular expression of a technical and typological development with an innovative character.

The architectural-historical values are determined by the expressive building style, the involvement of architect Joosten and constructor Huydts, the aesthetic qualities of the brewery building, the use of materials and the ornamentation.

Brewery De Ridder is situated particularly beautifully on the Maas, next to the St. Servaas Bridge and is in particular, due to the brewery building and the cooling house, a defining element in the protected Maastricht city centre as a 'face'. The brewery building is due to its location connected with the development of the city and of very particular significance for the appearance of Maastricht.

The exterior of the brewery building has, despite the construction of new commercial buildings around it, remained in reasonable condition. The interior, particularly of the brewing hall, is preserved in reasonable condition. Moreover, the brewery building is of very great importance in relation to the visual integrity of the urban environment.

Brewery De Ridder, as the last still operating Dutch brewery in the centre of a large city, is a good example of an urban brewery with great local significance and the brewery building therefore has a very great typological rarity. The architectural-historical and functional rarity of the brewery building is also considerable in a regional perspective.
