Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Riveted steel ARCH BRIDGE with reinforced concrete deck over the Julianakanaal, 1931-1934. Designed by the Bridge Department of Rijkswaterstaat and realised on commission of Rijkswaterstaat. The firm Begemann in Helmond manufactured the steel structure of the bridge in 1931, contractor G.B. van Hoek in Maastricht made the reinforced concrete deck in 1934. The bridge is located in the road connection between the current industrial area Beatrixhaven and the village Itteren. The abutments of this bridge were renewed in the early nineties. Similar bridges span the Julianakanaal at Bunde, Geulle and Obbicht.
Description
Riveted steel bridge with truss arch, as such the oldest example of the application of a steel-concrete deck in the Netherlands (so-called composite beam construction). The bridge has a span of 76.60 metres, a roadway width of 5.00 metres with on either side two footpaths of 0.80 metres. Main beams (centre to centre distance) of 7.00 metres.
Evaluation
The bridge over the Julianakanaal at the Klipperweg is of importance as a distinctive expression of an economic, administrative-political, technical and typological development with great innovative value. From an architectural-historical perspective, the bridge is of great importance for the history of building technology and because of its combined use of steel and concrete.
The bridge has ensemble values, being one of the bridges constructed over the Julianakanaal, is connected with the development of the region and is of importance for the appearance of the region.
The bridge has been preserved in a high degree of integrity. The bridge furthermore has great structural and typological rarity value, all in relation to the early application for the Netherlands of the steel-concrete construction.
