Inleiding
Dubbel WOONHUIS in zakelijk expressionistische stijl, 1935. Ingepast in de structuur van de oude binnenstad, op de hoek van Bredestraat en Hondstraat. Het pand werd gebouwd in opdracht van J.H. van Munster, naar een ontwerp van architect A. Schellinx. Het hoekvolume op de begane grond heeft inmiddels een winkelbestemming gekregen.
Omschrijving
Dubbel woonhuis. Het pand 2b telt drie bouwlagen met souterrain en zolderverdieping op een rechthoekige plattegrond en is voorzien van een zadeldak met een bakgoot op consoles. Pand 2a heeft een zeer smalle, onregelmatige plattegrond met afgeronde gevelhoek. Drie bouwlagen plus een souterrain onder een in hoogte verspringend plat dak, deels voorzien van een dakterras met balustrade.
Pand 2b heeft een symmetrische voorgevel. Centraal op de begane grond bevindt zich de rechthoekige houten voordeur onder betonlatei met bovenlicht. Aan weerszijden een dubbele vensteras. Rechthoekige verticaal ingedeelde houten vensters in de tweede en derde laag, rechthoekige ongelede houten vensters met recente rolluiken in de eerste laag.
Pand 2b heeft een ten opzichte van pand 2a teruggerooide, wigvormige entreepartij. Hierin een houten paneeldeur onder betonlatei met zij- en bovenlichten, plus twee ronde houten trappenhuisvensters. Het afgeronde hoekvolume is in elke laag voorzien van verticaal ingedeelde vensterreeksen met glas-in-lood. Vanaf de tweede bouwlaag stulpt de gevel uit, een constructie die wordt gedragen door een betonvloer. Het geheel kenmerkt zich door een met hardsteen beklede plint en portieklijsten; een geel genuanceerde bakstenen optrek in kettingverband; betonnen lateien en luifels; vensterrollagen; groen geglazuurde dorpels. De achtergevels zijn sober en gemetseld in kruisverband.
De interieurindeling van beide panden is grotendeels intact, maar bevat geen beschermenswaardige onderdelen.
Waardering
Het dubbele woonhuis aan de Hondstraat 2 a,b is van cultuurhistorisch belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van een typologische ontwikkeling. De architectuurhistorische waarden worden bepaald door de vormgeving en bouwstijl en de hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteit. Vanwege de door een straathoek bepaalde plattegrond is er een sterke samenhang tussen exterieur en interieur.
Uit oogpunt van ensemblewaarden is het pand van belang als zeer belangrijk onderdeel van het beschermde stadsgezicht, van zeer bijzondere betekenis vanwege de situering en voor het aanzien van de binnenstad.
Het pand is van belang vanwege de architectonische gaafheid en in relatie tot de structurele en visuele gaafheid van de stad. Tenslotte is er sprake van een architectuurhistorische en typologische zeldzaamheid.

The building was constructed on commission from J.H. van Munster, to a design by architect A. Schellinx. The corner volume on the ground floor has since been converted to retail use.
Description
Double dwelling house. Building 2b comprises three storeys with basement and attic storey on a rectangular floor plan and is provided with a gabled roof with a gutter on consoles. Building 2a has a very narrow, irregular floor plan with rounded facade corner. Three storeys plus a basement under a stepped flat roof, partly provided with a roof terrace with balustrade.
Building 2b has a symmetrical front facade. Centrally on the ground floor is a rectangular wooden front door under concrete lintel with fanlight. On either side a double window section. Rectangular vertically-divided wooden windows on the second and third storeys, rectangular undivided wooden windows with recent roller shutters on the first storey.
Building 2a has a recessed entrance section in wedge form in relation to building 2b. Within it a wooden panelled door under concrete lintel with side and fanlights, plus two round wooden stairwell windows. The rounded corner volume is provided on each storey with vertically-divided window sequences with leaded lights. From the second storey the facade projects outward, a construction supported by a concrete floor. The whole is characterised by a plinth and porch mouldings clad in hard stone; a yellow-toned brickwork in chain bond; concrete lintels and canopies; window roller cases; green-glazed sills. The rear facades are austere and laid in English bond.
The interior layout of both buildings is largely intact, but contains no components of heritage value.
Valuation
The double dwelling house at Hondstraat 2 a,b is of cultural-historical importance as a distinctive expression of a typological development. The architectural-historical values are determined by the design and building style and the high-quality aesthetic quality. Due to the floor plan determined by a street corner, there is strong coherence between exterior and interior.
