Inleiding
Eclecticische WINKELWONING, 1899, gebouwd naar een ontwerp van architect Joseph Hollman in opdracht van dhr. J. De Vries. Het pand is gesitueerd in de gesloten wand van de Grote Gracht. In 1980 werd de oorspronkelijke winkelpui uitgebroken ten behoeve van een doorgang naar het winkelcentrum Entre Deux. Deze doorgang is uitgesloten van bescherming.
Omschrijving
De voormalige winkelwoning heeft een in dwarsrichting geplaatste rechthoekige plattegrond, telt drie bouwlagen en wordt afgedekt met een zadeldak met grijze mulden pannen, een uietorentje en een ingesnoerde spits op de dakkapel voorzien van leien. In de erker doorlopende gootlijst op consoles, waartussen decoratief tegelwerk.
Het toegepaste bouwmateriaal is gele baksteen, hardsteen, smeedijzer, stucwerk, veelkleurig geglazuurd tegelwerk en hout.
Rechthoekige houten T-vensters, rechthoekige houten vensters met bovenlicht, rechthoekige houten vensters met decoratieve bovenlichtgeleding. Rechthoekig, ongeleed houten venster. Rechthoekige, dubbele houten balkondeuren. Rondboogvormige, gesloten vlakke deur voorzien van bovenlichtverdeling in zonmotief.
Pand met lijstgevel over twee verdiepingen, aan de oostzijde gedomineerd door een houten dubbele erker. Deze erker rust op een hardstenen vloertje waarvan de onderste kraagsteen met een vergulde ramskop gedecoreerd is. De driezijdige erker loopt boven de gootlijst uit in een uietorentje. De eerste bouwlaag is voorzien van een hardstenen bekleding in rustica-verband, de oorspronkelijke winkelpui is uitgebroken. Onder de erker is de woonhuisdeur gesitueerd. De tweede en derde bouwlaag bestaan uit muurvlakken van gele baksteen, horizontaal geleed door hardstenen waterlijsten, verlengde vensterdorpels en lateien. De vensterlijsten zijn versierd met gestucte composietkapitelen en gekleurd tegelwerk in de vulstukken en vensterspiegels. Deze vorm van ornamentiek keert terug in de houten erker. Onder de kroonlijst bevinden zich twee gestucte gevelplaquettes met het opschrift "ANNO" en "1899". Daartussen twee smeedijzeren ankers. Boven de voormalige winkelpui bevindt zich een balkon met smeedijzeren hekwerk.
De achtergevel van het pand is gebouwd op de oude stadswal.
Waardering
De voormalige winkelwoning is cultuurhistorisch van belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van een typologische ontwikkeling. Het pand is van architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de bouwstijl ; het belang voor de geschiedenis van de architectuur en vanwege de esthetische kwaliteiten, het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de uitermate rijke ornamentiek.
Het pand bezit ensemblewaarde als onderdeel van het beschermd stadsgezicht Maastricht en is van bijzondere betekenis voor het aanzien van de stad. In 1980 the original shop front was removed to create a passage to the Entre Deux shopping centre. This passage is excluded from protection.
Description
The former shop-dwelling has a rectangular floor plan positioned in transverse direction, comprises three storeys and is covered with a gabled roof with grey curved tiles, a turret and a tapered spire on the roof dormer fitted with slate. In the bay a continuous gutter line on consoles, between which decorative tilework.
The building materials used are yellow brick, hard stone, wrought iron, stucco, multicoloured glazed tilework and wood.
Rectangular wooden T-windows, rectangular wooden windows with fanlight, rectangular wooden windows with decorative fanlight glazing bars. Rectangular, unglazed wooden window. Rectangular, double wooden balcony doors. Round-arched, closed flat door fitted with fanlight glazing in sunburst motif.
Building with cornice-topped facade over two storeys, on the east side dominated by a wooden double bay. This bay rests on a hard stone floor tile of which the lower corbel is decorated with a gilded ram's head. The three-sided bay extends above the gutter line into a turret. The first storey is provided with a hard stone facing in rustication bond, the original shop front has been removed. Below the bay the residential entrance is situated. The second and third storeys consist of wall surfaces of yellow brick, articulated horizontally by hard stone drip mouldings, extended window sills and lintels. The window mouldings are decorated with stuccoed composite capitals and coloured tilework in the filler pieces and window panels. This form of ornamentation recurs in the wooden bay. Below the cornice are two stuccoed facade plaques with the inscription "ANNO" and "1899". Between them two wrought-iron wall anchors. Above the former shop front is a balcony with wrought-iron railwork.
The rear facade of the building is built on the old city rampart.
Valuation
The former shop-dwelling is of cultural-historical significance as a distinctive expression of a typological development. The building is of architectural-historical value because of its building style; its significance for the history of architecture and because of its aesthetic qualities, the distinctive use of materials and the extremely rich ornamentation.
The building possesses ensemble value as part of the protected townscape Maastricht and is of particular significance for the appearance of the city. The building is finally of general importance because of the architectural integrity of the exterior, otherwise with the exception of the first storey, and the typological rarity.
