Inleiding

Description
Introduction
A MONASTERY built around 1894 in a traditional-craft style with eclectic influences to a design by architect Johannes Kayser. The current monastery was built around 1894 after demolition of the old building. The CHURCH from 1729-'33 received a new facade whereby the front gable received a symmetrical layout. The monastery was enlarged in 1938 to a design by architect Jos Wielders in Sittard. In 1961/1962 the Gerarduskapel was built on the north side to a design by architect J. Petit from Heerlen. The enlargement from 1938 and the various post-war additions and annexes are excluded from protection, as are the buildings on the west side of the monastery church. The monastery was completely renovated in 1993/1994. During this renovation aluminium window frames with casement windows were installed in the front and rear facades in a white moulded finish and fitted with insulating glass; jointing and rainwater downpipes on the front facade were replaced.
Description
The semi-detached monastery complex has a rectangular ground plan and comprises four storeys and an attic floor. The hipped roofs and gabled roofs are covered with mill-pan tiles. Left front facade section with the entrance to the monastery church slightly projecting and terminating in a stepped gable. This entrance with a rectangular wooden door in a round-arched surround and round-arched leaded fanlight. Above this a large round-arched leaded glass window partly with rose-form tracery. This window is flanked by two figures on a pedestal under a baldachin.
The church was built to a design by architect Johann Conrad Schlaun from Münster (Germany). In the interior a central square nave with large semicircular windows on either side. The vaulted choir section and the portal adjoin this with curved forms and likewise have a square ground plan. The furnishings create a Baroque impression thanks to the pilaster decoration, the side altars and the figures. The church was enlarged around 1850 with a round domed chapel.
From the INTERIOR of the CHURCH the following are of particular importance: wooden figures from the seventeenth century of Our Lady and Saint Joseph on the side altars; Classicist main altar from the middle of the nineteenth century; organ gallery from the second half of the eighteenth century; two side altars from the middle of the eighteenth century and Stations of the Cross from the eighteenth century.
The right front facade section of the monastery likewise slightly projecting and terminating in a stepped gable with a large round-arched window divided by a profiled continuous chimney flue. Remaining front facade with rectangular aluminium windows and segmental arch-shaped and rectangular wooden doors. Series of roof dormers with small gabled roofs.
Bell tower with chimes consisting of a bell by Petit and Fritsen, 1854, diameter 80 centimetres and two modern bells. Mechanical tower clock, B. Eijsbouts, 1939, equipped with electrical winding.
From the INTERIOR of the MONASTERY the following are of particular importance the monastery library with wooden floor and wooden bookshelves. The height of the library extends over nearly three storeys of the monastery and can be accessed from the monastery on two floors. There are two galleries placed one above the other connected to each other by means of four open wooden spiral staircases and the whole covered with a wooden neo-Gothic barrel vault. Open wooden spiral staircases to the galleries, which are furnished with wooden balusters. The galleries are suspended from the facades and walls, on the front side with steel rods attached to the tie-rods of the roof truss structure. In the great refectory: floor partly in Namur stone and partly in wood; along the walls wooden wall panelling.
Interior layout otherwise intact apart from the recent renovation.
Special features: in the rear facade of the monastery an access staircase to the crypt beneath the monastery consisting of two rectangular spaces: round-arched doorway; staircase with stone steps; in the walls burial niches partly furnished with memorial plaques; access to the second, smaller space with stone surround; tile floors; vaulted ceilings.
Valuation:
The Redemptorist monastery possesses cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a cultural and spiritual development. The monastery possesses architectural-historical value because of its importance for the oeuvre of architects Johann Conrad Schlaun and Johannes Kayser, the high aesthetic qualities of the design, the particular material treatment and detailing and the ornamental work. The object is also of particular significance because of its situation connected with the development of this part of Wittem and for the appearance of this part of the municipality. The monastery and in particular the church and the library are of general importance because of the architectural integrity of the exterior and interior and the high degree of functional rarity.
