SHORT-GABLE FARMHOUSE dating from the first half of the 19th century, consisting of a dwelling house and lower adjoining barn with transverse outbuilding at the rear left. Located on the old residential axis of Sprang in the manner characteristic for the Langstraat of houses built offset relative to each other.

Description

The single-storey basement-level dwelling house is built in English bond of IJssel brick with red brick in the stretchers above windows and front door. It has a gabled roof between spout gables covered with red Old Dutch tiles. The front spout gable has a roll course and a stepped finish with semicircular capping, beneath which a top pilaster. The finish of the rear spout gable has been altered by a larger chimney. Bar anchors with geometric scoring in all walls. In the front facade to the left of centre lies the entrance with panelled door with carving and divided fanlight. On the left side one six-pane, on the right side two six-pane sash windows. On the upper storey two T-windows. Rendered plinth. The stone threshold and step plate for the entrance lie lower than street level. In the right side wall lies the narrow tall three-pane window characteristic for this type of house. Further one single-pane and two six-pane windows. In the left side wall a basement window and a T-window. Internally the main layout and old components are present. The central passage, paved with cement tiles with floral and scroll edge motifs, has intervening doors at the level of the kitchen and to the barn. To the right of the passage are front and rear rooms connected to each other by removal of the bed cupboards with retention of the intervening original cupboard. To the left of the passage are grouped in the space between front room and kitchen the attic staircase (from the passage), the staircase to the barrel-vaulted basement (from the kitchen) and the cupboard and former bed cupboard wall (room and kitchen). In the kitchen is the wide fireplace with moulded list on consoles present. All doors in the house are clamped doors. Beam flooring throughout the house. On the upper storey two tie-beam junctions with scissor rafter and collar tie. The lower adjoining barn is built in English bond of IJssel brick and has a gabled roof with half-hipped end covered with red Old Dutch tiles. The rear wall and adjoining parts of the side walls have been renewed. The left side wall with semi-clamp rear door with divided fanlight and single-pane window shows a construction joint at the house/barn junction and reused handmade brick. Enlargement of the barn in width by a section under lean-to roof and adjoining a section under gabled roof with the ridge transverse to the barn. Both sections in machine-made brick. In the right side wall lies a four-pane sash window with thumbs in left frame. After a construction joint machine-made brick has been applied. The rear wall under half-hipped end is partly built of wood and machine-made brick and has new doors and windows. Internally the barn has retained the original two one-sided projecting anchor-beam trusses.

The short-gable farmhouse has cultural-historical value as an example of a characteristic type that developed in the Langstraat. It has architectural-historical value due to the main structure of house and barn preserved both externally and internally intact and components of the interior.
