Inleiding

Hendriksen, 28 X 09.

Introduction

The former R.C. ASSOCIATION BUILDING at the Martiniplantsoen in Franeker was designed in 1909 by architect Nicolaas J. Adema (1860-1946) in Jugendstil, commissioned by the St. Antonius Association. The foundation stone was laid by J.H.A. Hendriksen, 28 X 09. The block-shaped building, facing north, is situated on the southern side of the plantsoen. The low-rise construction against the western side wall and rear wall is a recent infill of an open area and does not qualify for protection by the state.

Description

The Association Building has an L-shaped floor plan and is two storeys high. The composite roof with tall chimney consists of a flat roof, a cupola roof with finial above the tower section and a gabled roof above the asymmetrically positioned projecting section. The building is constructed in yellow brickwork. The plinth is laid in brown brickwork. At the height of the fanlights, bands of red and white brickwork with a diamond motif in the centre have been applied on both storeys. The asymmetry of the front facade is emphasized by the projecting entrance section with a spout gable. On the eastern side, the building block is closed off by a tower-shaped corner risalite. The facade sections – tower, entrance section and western and eastern bays – are marked by three brick finials, the western one with a gabled roof. Between the other two masonry finials with vertical mirror panels is an obliquely placed canopy on straight corbels. The projecting section with gabled roof is crowned by three brick finials. On the first storey from west to east are: a three-part window with segmental arched fanlight and relieved brick span and the (non-original) front door with wooden surround in the form of a horseshoe arch, above which a closure executed in red brickwork with the date A 1909 O, an H-window with segmental arched fanlight, a three-part window with segmental arched fanlight and an H-window in the tower section. Leaded glass has been installed in the fanlights; the sub-sills are of glazed, rounded red and white stones. The first storey is separated from the second by a profiled and masonry cordon string-course in red brickwork. Here are to be found single-light and three-part windows with multi-light fanlights. West of the projecting section is a three-part window with balcony door and multi-light fanlights. The sub-sills rest on the cordon string-course; the windows are enclosed by masonry corner mouldings in red brickwork. In the top of the projecting section two single-light windows with semi-circular fanlight against a background of red brickwork. Between the windows, in a niche with masonry surround and on a plinth, stands the statue of St. Antonius with child. The top is crowned by three finials with two eagles on them and in the centre a lion with coat of arms. The facade sections on either side are closed off by a rising list rendered with a wave line. The masonry field is executed in red brickwork and is decorated by the name of the building and masonry festoons. In the eastern section "R.C. VEREENIGINGS" has been applied, in the western section "GEBOUW". The eastern side wall is two storeys high and is decorated by masonry bands in red brickwork. The facade is composed of eight bays with pilaster strips and dentil mouldings as terminations. In the first six bays from the front facade are rectangular, three-part windows with relieved brick spans and empty drum fields. The extension under the first two windows and the two doors under the third and fifth windows are of a later date. Above, small, slightly curved windows have been placed. In the last two bays are two large windows with relieved brick spans high beneath the eaves line. The rear wall is decorated by four bands in red brickwork. In the middle and upper part of the facade are two rectangular windows with relieved brick spans and wooden shutters. On the western side, a later extension in brown/red brickwork was added. The western side wall is on the northern side barely visible due to vegetation. The higher section is decorated by double bands of red brickwork and contains a side entrance and a new window. The INTERIOR is reasonably original in terms of layout. As regards furnishings, only the vestibule is still original. There a tiled floor and wainscoting with floral motifs. The light blue tiling is closed off by a broad tiled band of daisies on a light green background. The staircase to the second storey is provided with rich woodcarving. Also original are the wooden double doors (to the small halls) with panels and Jugendstil motifs and the wooden double doors with slightly arched glass in the upper section, opposite the entrance. The small halls and the large hall were refurbished in the 1960s-70s. The stage at the back of the large hall is original, as are the spaces to the left and right of it which were used as dressing room and cellar. The spaces east of the vestibule are no longer original. The layout of the second storey is original.
