The register's description

HOOFDGEBOUW (Huis Valkenheining).

MAIN BUILDING (Huis Valkenheining). The house is formed by a brick main building with cellar on a rectangular ground plan and a slightly recessed, lower outbuilding also on a rectangular ground plan. The main building is covered with a hipped roof clad with grey tiles, with two square chimneys, each under a cap, at the ridge ends. The outbuilding is covered with a gabled roof clad with grey tiles, which is cut off on the side of the main building. Both main and outbuilding are (now) painted soft yellow. The front facade of the main building consists of a facade section divided into five bays with a slightly projecting central risalitcon in which the entrance section is located. The central risalite is crowned by a tympanum in which an oval-shaped window. A cornice runs around the roof. In front of the entrance section is a hard stone staircase with landing, along which a wrought iron railing. The main entrance consists of a double panelled door with an arched 4-paned fanlight on the interior side fitted with a theft bar with star-shaped decoration. The main entrance is surrounded by an arched cornice which is supported by two Ionic pilasters, decorated under the capitals and at the bottom with acanthus leaf and floral decoration. On either side of the staircase at basement level are two (now) double 18-paned windows fitted with shutters. On the piano nobile on either side of the entrance section two (now) 45-paned sash windows. On the first floor five sash windows with (now) 30-pane glazing bars. The lanterns with volute-shaped arms on either side of the double door were installed during restoration in the 1970s. On the upper right side of the facade is a sundial which extends to the right side facade. In the left facade (north-west) the flue of the chimney is centrally built out, supported by iron bands. On the piano nobile level on either side of the flue a blind opening, above it on the first floor a smaller one. The right facade (south-east) against which the outbuilding is placed, has on the piano nobile a (now) 18-paned window and on the first floor a (now) 15-paned window. The transition from main to outbuilding is accentuated on this facade section by a dogtooth moulding. The rear facade of the main building has an irregular window arrangement. On the roof is a dormer window. The dormer has an arched surround and a (now) double 12-paned glazing. The rear facade is to be divided into three bays. In the left bay on the piano nobile is a blind opening, on the first floor are two (now) 24-paned hopper windows, before restoration in the 1970s there was one window here. This bay was provided during the renovation with an external staircase to the basement, flanked by 12-paned windows. The middle bay shows the windows which are in the stairwell. Within the bay three (now) 15-paned hopper windows project inward. The bay ends with a (now) 12-paned hopper window in the right upper corner. The right bay was provided in the 1920s with a raised terrace, accessible by a brick step staircase. The terrace is protected by a tent-like covering and a wind screen consisting of a 9-paned window. In 1994 a scalloped edge was again installed along the covering. The two (now) 45-paned sash windows that look out onto the terrace were provided during the most recent renovation with a system allowing them to function as doors. The 18th-century small fountain on the terrace was built in around the 1930s, its origin is unclear. On the first floor is a (now) 12-paned hopper window with shutter. The recessed outbuilding, originally serving the function of coach house and stable (now serving the functions of music room, gardener's dwelling, guest accommodation and garage), is on the front irregularly divided into seven (window) bays. The side facade of the outbuilding has a spout gable, the northern roof slope is lower than the southern one. Slightly off-centre is a door with arched fanlight with glazing bars. On either side provided with a 6-paned window. Above the entrance section a window with 12-pane glazing. The rear side of the outbuilding has an irregular window arrangement. The part adjoining the main building has, in contrast to the first part, a first floor. On the roof a dormer window provided with a (now) double 6-paned window. The side facade at right angles to the main building has on the ground floor a door, installed during restoration in the 1970s, and a (now) 9-paned sash window. On the first floor are here two (now) 12-paned sash windows and on the second floor a (now) 12-paned window. The interior of the main building was largely adapted around 1740 by Wouter Valckenier. He had the house embellished and provided with elements in Louis XV style. The hall, located behind the main entrance, has a marble floor and is closed off by a wall with three doors crowned by a cornice. The outer doors give access to the stairwell. The stairwell is tiled with original white tiles with on the corners of each flight a round tile, representing balusters. The oak staircase runs around and partly through two alcoves. The ceiling in the hall is stuccoed in Louis XV style. In the left room (west) the fireplace has a mantel in Louis XV style and the overmantel part of the fireplace is stuccoed and provided with floral elements such as daffodils, roses, grass and a gargoyle. The stucco ceiling is also in Louis XV style. The floor sections dating from the building period (as also in the right room) are of pine. The windows on the front of the house are provided with folding oak shutters. In the right room (east) the fireplace is provided with a Louis XV mantel. The overmantel part has stuccoed decorative work in Louis XV style and a contemporary overmantel painting. The hearthstone is of cast iron. In the south wall a wall cupboard, closed by a door arched at top and bottom provided with 65 small panes. Opposite the wall cupboard is a stuccoed niche, in which a river god and rococo elements. The stucco ceiling is in Louis XV style. The walls are provided with wainscoting and the shutters are now painted. The right room on the first floor has a robust fireplace in Louis XIV style. The kitchen was returned during renovation in the 1970s to its original location in the basement and is provided with the original tiled floor. The basement has small trough vaults between wooden tie beams.
