Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Villa, built circa 1898 on the instructions of and as a residence for Livinius baron de Loë, by architect Joseph Buchkremer from Aachen. The villa is largely obscured from view by trees and is markedly situated diagonally opposite the castle Mheer, high on the east side of the Duivenstraat. The ground surrounding the house was subdivided in the 1970s and built over with bungalows.
Description
The villa has an irregular floor plan and is constructed in red brickwork (stretcher bond, flush jointed) on a rubble stone plinth with the use of marl at the corners and blocks and bands in the facade planes. Porch executed with canopy supported by corbels, the porch covering resting on a hardstone column with plinth, ringed shaft and Maas-valley capital, wooden wainscoting with a dentil moulding. In the facade field of the porch a stone tablet with the year "1898" and the coat of arms of the De Loë family. In the inner corner of the front facade, to the right of the porch and at the level of the first floor stands a small statue on console and under baldachin. This statuette shows the apostle Philip who carries a cross between his folded hands and chest: inscription "S. Philippe anno 1901 Protege Hanc Domum". The square building block under hipped roof is extended on the entrance side and on the left side and respectively brought under a gabled roof and hipped roof which connect to the main roof. Overhanging and supported on profiled corbels, roof truss structure. In all facades hardstone windows in the form of single undivided and coupled two-, three- and four-light windows with fixed transom bar; the hardstone is provided with fine tooling. The exterior of the villa is in virtually unaltered condition: only on the sunny side has a window been enlarged for the benefit of double French doors to the (non-original) terrace. The interior retains virtually the original layout, materials and detailing, including cellars with mortared trough vaults, tile and tiled floors, original plinth and framing, a marl stone fireplace - executed with fireplace plaques bearing the coat of arms of the Curtius family (Land of Liège) (ground floor) - built-in cupboards with (sliding) doors, beam ceilings with principal beams and profiled secondary beams, a broad oak staircase with profiled newel posts and flat, perspectival openwork balusters, profiled panel doors, wrought-iron hinges and fittings. The wainscoting in the hall consists of interior shutters from the building sawn up and adapted for this purpose.
Valuation
The villa is of general architectural-historical significance because the balanced main forms and the original internal spatial arrangement have been preserved and these, in combination with the high degree of craftsmanship - for example expressed in the careful brickwork, wrought-iron fittings, hewn natural stone and open woodworking joints. The well-considered combination of building materials such as brick, marl stone and hardstone is characteristic of South Limburg and as such of general architectural-historical significance. Stylistic affinity - in representativeness, use of materials - with the architecture of the nearby castle Mheer supports the original functional relationship between villa and castle, it being noted that the spatial relationship between the two objects has suffered somewhat in historical geographical terms as a result of subdivision, new construction and road realignment. Similarities with the English country house style employed lend the villa a remarkable additional stylistic significance. Within this spatial context the villa functions on the one hand as a historical enclave among modern bungalows, on the other hand as a marking historical stepping stone through which the original extent of the castle with its possessions is outlined and the historical experiential value of and between the two monuments is expressed.
