Inleiding
In het oostelijk deel van het Vondelpark op 18 october 1867 geplaatst VONDELMONUMENT waarvan de sokkel ontworpen is door P.J.H. Cuypers. Het schaalmodel is ontworpen door Louis Royer. De uitvoering van het model op ware grootte is van Jan Stracke Izn. Jean Lauweriks is verantwoordelijk voor het ornamenteel beeldhouwwerk in zandsteen en hardsteen en schutsengelen van het Treurspel, het Hekeldicht, het Leerdicht en de Gewijde Poezie in zandsteen voor de sokkel. Het Vondelbeeld werd in brons gegoten door de Haagse metaalgieterij Enthoven & Co. in opdracht van het bestuur van de Vereeniging tot oprichting van een Rij- en Wandelpark te Amsterdam.
Omschrijving
Op een cirkelvormig terrein, begrensd door een smeedijzeren sierhek, opgetrokken bronzen standbeeld op een hoge vierkante in Trierse natuursteen vormgegeven sokkel. De sokkel, waarvan de plattegrond de vorm heeft van een Grieks kruis met ingeschreven vierkant, rust op een deels gemetselde en deels natuurstenen plint welke wordt omgrensd door acht korte bewerkte pijlers met elkaar verbonden door ijzeren kettingen.
Op de vier hoeken van de sokkel vier genien met attributen symboliserend het Treurspel, het Leerdicht, de Gewijde Poezie en het Hekeldicht. Aan alle vier zijden van de sokkel een cartouche waarin aan de voorzijde (W) gebeiteld een korte levensbeschrijving van Vondel met daaronder het stadswapen van Amsterdam, aan de rechterzijde (N) de belangrijkste werken van Vondel, aan de linkerzijde (Z) een hulde aan wat Vondel gedaan heeft voor stad en land en aan de achterzijde (O) de inscriptie 'SCRIPSIT AETERNITATI' (hij heeft geschreven voor de eeuwigheid).
Het bronzen beeld toont Vondel gezeten op een stoel met in zijn rechterhand een ganzeveer en in zijn linker een opengeslagen boek. Tegen een van de stoelpoten rust een plakkaat met daarop de naam van Virgilius.
Waardering
Vondelmonument van kunsthistorisch en cultuurhistorisch belang als herinnering aan een van 's lands beroemdste dichters. Eveneens van belang als naamgevend onderdeel van bebouwing en objecten in het Vondelpark.

Introduction
In the eastern part of the Vondelpark placed on 18 October 1867 VONDEL MONUMENT of which the pedestal was designed by P.J.H. Cuypers. The scale model was designed by Louis Royer. The execution of the model at full size is by Jan Stracke Izn. Jean Lauweriks is responsible for the ornamental sculptural work in sandstone and hardstone and guardian angels of Tragedy, Satire, Didactic Poetry and Sacred Poetry in sandstone for the pedestal. The Vondel statue was cast in bronze by The Hague metal foundry Enthoven & Co. commissioned by the board of the Association for the establishment of a Riding and Walking Park in Amsterdam.
Description
On a circular site, bounded by a wrought-iron ornamental fence, erected bronze statue on a high square pedestal rendered in Treveran natural stone. The pedestal, of which the floor plan has the shape of a Greek cross with inscribed square, rests on a partly masoned and partly natural stone plinth which is bounded by eight short worked piers connected to each other by iron chains.
On the four corners of the pedestal four genii with attributes symbolising Tragedy, Didactic Poetry, Sacred Poetry and Satire. On all four sides of the pedestal a cartouche with on the front (W) chiselled a short biography of Vondel with below it the city coat of arms of Amsterdam, on the right side (N) the most important works of Vondel, on the left side (Z) a tribute to what Vondel did for city and country and on the rear side (E) the inscription 'SCRIPSIT AETERNITATI' (he wrote for eternity).
The bronze statue shows Vondel seated on a chair with in his right hand a quill and in his left an open book. Against one of the chair legs rests a placard bearing the name of Virgilius.
Valuation
Vondel Monument of art-historical and cultural-historical importance as a reminder of one of the country's most famous poets. Also of importance as a name-giving component of buildings and objects in the Vondelpark.
