Inleiding
Voormalig WOONHUIS, vermoedelijk gebouwd in de 17de eeuw maar in detweede helft van de 19de eeuw voorzien van nieuwe gevels en interieur-onderdelen.
Het pand is gelegen aan de noord-westzijde van de Oosterhaven. Het dijkhoekpand is terug te vinden in het Oud-Archief van Medemblik (wanneer er belasting voor betaald wordt). Het huis is onder meer de woning van burgemeester van Houweningen geweest, en is thans in gebruik als woonhuis annex café.
Omschrijving
Het twee bouwlagen en één kapverdieping tellende pand is geplaatst op een rechthoekige plattegrond en wordt gedekt door een schilddak voorzien van zwart verglaasde, platte pannen. Het pand heeft een hoge, hardstenen stoep met stoeppalen en kettingen aan de zijde van de Oosterhaven.
De voorgevel (zuid) is over beide bouwlagen verdeeld in vijf vensterassen waarvan de middelste op de begane grond de enigszins excentrisch geplaatste ingangspartij onder kroonlijst met voluutvormige consoles bevat.
De vensters zijn aan de bovenzijde lichtgebogen onder rijkbewerkte stuccowenkbrauwen met vegetatieve ornamenten en kopje. De twee rechter vensters zijn smaller dan de linker vensters.
De eerste verdieping bevat dezelfde schuiframen met decoratie als die op de begane grond, waarbij de vaste ramen van de schuifvensters glas-in-lood bezitten. Boven de ingangspartij bevindt zich een blind venster.
De voorgevel wordt afgesloten door een verhoogde kroonlijst, gesteund door consoles. Tussen de consoles is het fries bewerkt met spaarvelden waar in het midden een blokmotief is aangebracht. Het dak is voorzien van een dakkapel met gesneden vleugelstukken, bekroond door een scheepje.
De linker zijgevel (west) aan de zijde van de straat naar het Gedempte Achterom heeft ingangen naar souterrain en bar, en is voorzien van een reeks gladde muurankers en vier rechthoekige vensters met bovenlicht op de begane grond waarboven zich eveneens een rij muurankers bevindt. Boven in deze gevel is een rond venster met gietijzeren traceringen aangebracht. Tegen de achtergevel is in de 20ste eeuw een grote, ongepleisterde uitbouw aangebouwd, die niet beschermenswaardig is.
In het interieur zijn nog elementen te herkennen die dateren uit de ontstaansperiode van het pand, zoals de keldergewelven met tegeltableaux (waarop onder andere oude ambachten zijn afgebeeld) en restanten van moerbinten. De glas-in-lood deuren in de achterkamer en het stuccoplafond werden aan het eind van de 19de eeuw aangebracht.
Waardering
Het pand is van architectuurhistorische betekenis als goed voorbeeld van een in de kern vermoedelijk 17de-eeuws dijkhuis met gevels en interieur-onderdelen uit de tweede helft van de 19de eeuw, alsmede vanwege de oorspronkelijke onderdelen in het interieur.
Tevens is het huis van beeldbepalend belang vanwege de karakteristieke hoofdvorm en als onderdeel van de oude bebouwing aan de Oosterhaven.

Former DWELLING HOUSE, presumably built in the 17th century but provided with new facades and interior components in the second half of the 19th century.
The building is located on the north-west side of the Oosterhaven. The corner dike building can be traced in the Old Archive of Medemblik (when tax is paid for it). The house was among other things the residence of burgemeester van Houweningen, and is currently in use as a dwelling house together with a café.
Description
The building comprising two storeys and one attic storey is set on a rectangular ground plan and is covered by a hipped roof fitted with black glazed, flat tiles. The building has a high, stone step with bollards and chains on the side of the Oosterhaven.
The front facade (south) is divided over both storeys into five window bays, of which the middle one on the ground floor contains the somewhat eccentrically placed entrance section under a cornice with scroll-shaped consoles.
The windows are slightly arched at the top under richly worked stucco eyebrows with vegetative ornaments and a head. The two right-hand windows are narrower than the left-hand windows.
The first storey contains the same sash windows with decoration as those on the ground floor, whereby the fixed frames of the sash windows have leaded glass. Above the entrance section is a blind window.
The front facade is concluded by a raised cornice, supported by consoles. Between the consoles the frieze is worked with spandrels where a block motif is placed in the middle. The roof is fitted with a dormer with carved wing pieces, crowned by a ship weathervane.
The left side facade (west) on the side of the street to the Gedempte Achterom has entrances to the basement and bar, and is furnished with a series of smooth ornamental wall anchors and four rectangular windows with fanlights on the ground floor above which there is also a row of ornamental wall anchors. High up in this facade is a round window with cast-iron tracery. Against the rear facade a large, unplastered extension was built in the 20th century, which is not worthy of protection.
In the interior, elements can still be recognized that date from the period of origin of the building, such as the basement vaults with tile tableaux (on which among other things old crafts are depicted) and remnants of timber bonds. The leaded glass doors in the back room and the stucco ceiling were added at the end of the 19th century.
Valuation
The building is of architectural-historical significance as a good example of a dike house presumably of 17th-century origin with facades and interior components from the second half of the 19th century, as well as because of the original components in the interior.
Moreover, the house is of defining visual importance because of the characteristic main form and as part of the old buildings on the Oosterhaven.
