Inleiding

Introduction

The POST OFFICE, built in 1910, located on the north side of Bagijnhof. An extension was later placed at the rear of the building.

N.B. The extension mentioned above falls outside the protection

Description

The post office comprises two storeys and one roof storey and is built on a T-shaped ground plan and is constructed of red brick. The building is covered by a hipped roof with half-hipped ends on the sides and at recessed gables above the central risalits of the front and rear facades. The roof is covered with black Frisian cross tiles. The half-hipped ends of the gabled roofs are each crowned with a finial. Natural stone drip mouldings and window frames are applied to the entire facade, as well as ornamental wall anchors which are located above the windows. The lowest ornamental wall anchors each contain a numeral of the building year 1910. The first floor is separated from the ground floor by a natural stone cornice. The building is provided with T-shaped sash windows with three-light segment-shaped finished fanlights.

The front facade, resting on a natural stone plinth, has a central risalit, which has two T-windows on both the ground floor and the first floor. Between the windows on the ground floor there is also a natural stone letterbox. On both floors three ornamental wall anchors are each applied and on the ground floor there is above each window a small air vent. The central risalit cuts through the cornice and has at the height of the roof storey five segment-shaped finished window bays, which, parallel to the cornice, increase in height from outside to inside and are placed on a continuous natural stone drip moulding. The three middle windows are provided with sash frames and three-light fanlights, while the two outer bays are blind niches. An overhanging cornice, which is ended with volutes, closes off the projecting facade. The cornice is supported by wooden moulded consoles. The left and right bays of the front facade mirror each other and have on the ground floor on the exterior a portico, above which a fanlight with three round-arched windows in leaded glass is applied. In the portico there is a wooden panel door. The portals are flanked by a window. The first floor has two windows on both bays. The cornice that ends both facades is decorated with small moulded consoles. The roof storey has on both sides of the recessed roof above the central risalit a roof dormer, which is provided with slate roof covering.

The right side facade of the building has on the ground floor a sash window, which is located in the middle of the gable wall. The first floor is separated from the ground floor by a natural stone cornice, and has on the left half of the gable wall a T-sash window. On the right half there is a small window, divided into two by a vertical glazing bar. The roof storey has five window bays identical to the windows at the height of the roof in the central risalit. The side facade is finished with a wooden cornice, supported by decorated wooden consoles.

The ground floor and first floor of the left side facade have respectively on the left and right a T-sash window; the window on the ground floor is provided with a cast-iron grille. The facade of the roof storey is, like the cornice, identical to that of the right side facade. The left side facade is also flanked on the left side by a slightly recessed gable wall with flat roof, in which on the first floor three narrow tall leaded glass windows are located, provided with a continuous natural stone drip moulding. The rear facades of the main volume are blank.

The rear and side facades on the ground floor of the building section that stands perpendicular to the main volume are, due to the recent extension, no longer visible. The first floor of this section has on the side facades each one T-sash window with segment-shaped three-part fanlight. On the rear facade there are two of these windows. The roof storey of the rear facade has the same window layout and cornice as the roof storeys on the side facades and central risalit on the front of the main section.

Valuation

The well-preserved post office is of general importance due to cultural-historical and architectural-historical value, being a well-preserved example of a post office from the second half of the 19th century. The building also has a landmark value in relation to the buildings on Bagijnhof.
