Inleiding
Het WOONHUIS, van het zgn. rentenierswoningtype, met aangebouwd KOETSHUIS is gebouwd in het derde kwart van de 19de eeuw. Het object is in bouwtrant beïnvloed door het baksteenclassicisme. Tegenwoordig doet de woning tevens dienst als museum, gewijd aan een vroegere bewoonster van het pand, de schrijfster Simke Kloosterman. Ter herinnering aan haar is een gedenksteen in de voorgevel geplaatst met opschrift: Simke Kloosterman 5 dec. 1938 Margrit Renia California U.S.A.
Aan de achterzijde van het pand heeft een uitbreiding plaatsgevonden waarbij het dakschild is doorgetrokken en de gevel is gewijzigd. In 1969 is de woning inpandig verbouwd en is het buitenprivaat gesloopt. Het koetshuis is aan de noordoostzijde van het woonhuis gesitueerd en is voor een deel achter de woning gebouwd. Het pand wordt omgeven door een mooie tuin die, wegens te geringe tuinhistorische waarden, voor de bescherming van rijkswege van ondergschikt belang is. In de voortuin staan solitaire beuken en rhododendrons. In de diepe achtertuin met slingerpadenbeloop, vijver, prieeltje en aardhoop staan beuken, hulst en rhododenrons. Het houten prieeltje met schilddak, waar volgens overlevering Simke Kloosterman haar boeken schreef, is met riet gedekt en heeft een houten vloer. Het prieeltje is van ondergeschikt belang vanwege de geringe architectonische waarde. Het gehele terrein wordt begrensd door sloten en wallen. De entreehekken bij de slootdam aan de voorzijde bestaan uit houten hekstijlen met ijzeren hekwerk. In 1989 is aan de achterzijde van de woning een serre aangebouwd die van bescherming is uitgesloten. Aan de vensters aan de voorgevel zijn recentelijk nieuwe persiènnes aangebracht.
Omschrijving
Het woonhuis van één bouwlaag is op een rechthoekige plattegrond gebouwd. Het schilddak is gedekt met mat geglazuurde Hollandse pannen waar oorspronkelijk zwart geglazuurde platte Friese pannen lagen. Aan de achterzijde is het dakschild doorgetrokken. Twee schoorstenen met schoorsteenborden op de hoeken van de nok en hoekkepers. Het opgaand muurwerk bestaat uit bruine handvormbaksteen met een gepleisterde plint en een brede geprofileerde daklijst en een gootlijst. Bakstenen lisenen met spiegelvlakken zijn op de hoeken van de voorgevel en aan weerszijden van de entree in het middenrisaliet. De oorspronkelijke paneeldeur met middenstijl heeft een licht getoogd bovenlicht en geprofileerde omlijsting. Voor de entree is een gedeeltelijk beraapte, gedeeltelijk natuurstenen stoep. Aan weerszijden van de entree zijn twee verticale, licht getoogde zesruitsvensters onder strek. Ter hoogte van de onderdorpel is een houten cordonlijst rond het gehele pand. De grote houten kajuit boven de entree heeft een tympaanvormige bekroning met accoladeboog tussen de twee pilasters met keramische kapitelen. Aan de achterzijde van het pand is een vernieuwd keukenraam, een gedicht provisiekelderraam en een kippeladdertje.
Eén der voorkamers is thans museumkamer, gewijd aan de vroegere bewoonster Simke Kloosterman (schrijfster). Het interieur van deze kamer verkeert grotendeels in oorspronkelijke staat. In de kamer is de bedstedewand aanwezig. De schoorsteen is voorzien van tegels met strooibloemen. Het schoorsteenstuk is in bruikleen van het Fries Museum.
Het aangebouwde koetshuis is aan de noordoostzijde en heeft een zadeldak met Hollandse pannen en windveren. Het is opgetrokken in bruine handvormstenen van groot formaat. Aan weerszijden van de dubbele schuurdeuren zijn pilasters waarop een kroonlijst. Het halfronde bovenlicht met brede omlijsting heeft een boogvormige roedeverdeling.
Waardering
Het woonhuis met koetshuis is in het derde kwart van de 19de eeuw in Twijzel gebouwd en van cultuurhistorische en architectonische betekenis vanwege:
- de eenvoudige maar verzorgde proportionering van het woonhuis,

The RESIDENTIAL HOUSE, of the so-called rentier dwelling type, with adjoining COACH HOUSE was built in the third quarter of the 19th century. The building was influenced in construction style by brick classicism. Nowadays the house also serves as a museum, dedicated to a former resident of the property, the writer Simke Kloosterman. In remembrance of her, a commemorative stone has been placed in the front gable with inscription: Simke Kloosterman 5 dec. 1938 Margrit Renia California U.S.A.
An extension has taken place at the rear of the property whereby the roof slope is continued and the gable has been altered. In 1969 the house was internally renovated and the external privy was demolished. The coach house is situated on the northeast side of the residential house and is partly built behind the house. The property is surrounded by a fine garden which, due to insufficient garden-historical significance, is of secondary importance for national monument protection. Solitary beeches and rhododendrons stand in the front garden. In the deep back garden with winding paths, pond, arbour and mound stand beeches, holly and rhododendrons. The wooden arbour with hipped roof, where according to tradition Simke Kloosterman wrote her books, is covered with thatch and has a wooden floor. The arbour is of secondary importance due to its limited architectural value. The entire site is bounded by ditches and earthen banks. The entrance gates at the ditch embankment at the front consist of wooden gate posts with iron fencing. In 1989 a conservatory was built on the rear side of the house which has been excluded from protection. Recently new venetian blinds have been applied to the windows on the front gable.
Description
The residential house of one storey is built on a rectangular ground plan. The hipped roof is covered with matt glazed Dutch tiles where originally black glazed flat Frisian tiles lay. On the rear side the roof slope is continued. Two chimneys with chimney boards on the ridge corners and hip rafters. The external masonry consists of brown hand-moulded brick with plastered plinth and a wide moulded drip moulding and gutter moulding. Brick pilasters with mirror panels are on the corners of the front gable and on either side of the entrance in the central risalit. The original panel door with central mullion has a slightly arched fanlight and moulded frame. A partly rendered, partly natural stone step is placed before the entrance. On either side of the entrance are two vertical, slightly arched six-light windows under lintel. At the level of the sill is a wooden cordon moulding around the entire building. The large wooden gable window above the entrance has a tympanum-shaped crown with accolade arch between the two pilasters with ceramic capitals. On the rear side of the property is a renovated kitchen window, a blocked provisions cellar window and a small ladder.
One of the front rooms is now a museum room, dedicated to the former resident Simke Kloosterman (writer). The interior of this room is largely in original condition. In the room is the bed alcove wall present. The fireplace is fitted with tiles with scattered flowers. The fireplace surround is on loan from the Frisian Museum.
The adjoining coach house is on the northeast side and has a gabled roof with Dutch tiles and roof finials. It is built in brown hand-moulded bricks of large format. On either side of the double barn doors are pilasters on which is a cornice. The semi-circular fanlight with wide frame has an arched glazing bar pattern.
Valuation
The residential house with coach house was built in the third quarter of the 19th century in Twijzel and is of cultural-historical and architectural significance because of:
- the simple but carefully executed proportioning of the residential house,
- the situation and visual integrity of the whole, including garden, arbour and entrance gate,
