Inleiding
De 18 meter hoge WINDMOLEN of zgn. Amerikaanse windmotor op een molenwerf in het open weidelandschap van het waterschap "De Twee Provinciën" (thans Waterschap Lits & Lauwers) is een dominant herkenningspunt ten noordoosten van Gerkesklooster. De molen is gelegen aan de Lauwers waarin het overtollige waterbezwaar uitslaat. Het waterschap omvatte bij oprichting in 1918 230 ha. op het grondgebied van de gemeenten Achtkarspelen (provincie Friesland), Grotegast en Grijpskerk (provincie Groningen). De naar Amerikaans model ontstane windmolen van het type "Hercules Metallicus", uit Duitsland geïmporteerd door de Rotterdamse handelsmaatschappij R.S. Stokvis & Zonen, werd 1923 alhier door de fa. Koelstra en Dolk geplaatst. De molen bemaalde als enige de gehele polder. De molen werd in 1991 gerenoveerd.
Omschrijving
De toren met windrad staat op een onderbouw. Dit zgn. molenhuis is opgetrokken uit gesinterde rode bakstenen, met een stroomlaag als gevelafsluiting. In de onderbouw zitten vier recente houten getoogde kruisvensters. De opgeklampte houten rondboogdeur is vernieuwd. Het molenhuis is gedekt met een platte betonnen dekplaat waarvan het overstek is geprofileerd en aan de onderzijde op regelmatige afstand is voorzien van geprofileerde consoles. De stalen toren staat op de betonplaat en heeft een ladder en een houten platform. Het windrad heeft een vlucht van 11 meter en telt 30 gegalvaniseerde ijzeren bladen. De molen is voorzien van twee vanen: een hoofdvaan en een zijvaan. De eerste dient voor de zelfregeling naar de windrichting, de tweede voor de zelfregeling naar windsterkte. De inlaat is voorzien van een ijzeren krooshek, waarachter de ijzeren vijzel; de uitstort bestaat uit een betonnen vloer met gemetselde muurtjes.
Waardering
De zgn. Amerikaanse windmotor uit 1923 is van cultuurhistorisch en industrieel-archeologisch belang:
- voor de geschiedenis van de industriele archeologie, in het bijzonder van de windmotoren,
- vanwege de ontwikkeling van de bemalingstechniek naar Amerikaans model,
- vanwege zijn rol voor het ontstaan en de bemalingsgeschiedenis van het voormalige waterschap De Twee Provinciën,
- vanwege de hoge mate van gaafheid,
- vanwege zijn landschappelijke betekenis als markant herkenningspunt langs de Lauwers in het open weidelandschap ten noorden van Gerkesklooster/Stroobos,

The 18 metre high WINDMILL or so-called American wind motor on a mill yard in the open meadow landscape of the water board "De Twee Provinciën" (now Waterschap Lits & Lauwers) is a dominant landmark to the north-east of Gerkesklooster. Description
The tower with wind wheel stands on a base structure. This so-called mill house is built of sintered red bricks, with a string course as the facade finish. In the base structure are four recent wooden arched cross windows. The clamped wooden semicircular arched door has been renewed. The mill house is covered with a flat concrete cover plate, of which the overhang is profiled and on the underside is provided at regular intervals with profiled consoles. The steel tower stands on the concrete plate and has a ladder and a wooden platform. The wind wheel has a span of 11 metres and has 30 galvanised iron blades. The mill is fitted with two vanes: a main vane and a side vane. The first serves for self-regulation according to wind direction, the second for self-regulation according to wind strength. The inlet is provided with an iron trash screen, behind which is the iron screw; the discharge consists of a concrete floor with mortared brick walls.

The so-called American wind motor from 1923 is of cultural-historical and industrial-archaeological importance:
- for the history of industrial archaeology, in particular of wind motors,
- because of the development of pumping technology according to the American model,
- because of its role in the establishment and pumping history of the former water board De Twee Provinciën,
- because of the high degree of integrity,
- because of its landscape significance as a distinctive landmark along the Lauwers in the open meadow landscape to the north of Gerkesklooster/Stroobos,
- because of the high degree of rarity in the municipality of Achtkarspelen and the region of the Friese Wouden.
