Inleiding

Introduction

The PARSONAGE was realised around 1884, presumably on the site of an older parsonage, opposite the N.H. church from 1724. The subordinate parsonage subsequently served as a dwelling house and practice of a general practitioner.

Nowadays the building is used as a dwelling house/gallery. A narrow strip of greenery in front of the house and a hedge form the boundary with the public road. Around the spacious back garden with birches, fruit and coniferous trees is a wall partly constructed in yellow bricks with a basket-arch and a round-arch gateway.

Description

The former parsonage of two storeys is built on an L-shaped ground plan. The hipped roof with broad gutter moulding is covered with black glazed corrugated Frisian tiles. On the corners of the ridge and hip rafters stand three chimneys with chimney breasts. The rising masonry consists of brown waalstenen on a plastered plinth. The detailing of the front facade is richer than on the other facades. The front facade is symmetrically arranged and is terminated by a narrow cornice and gutter moulding. The corner pilasters have different detailing per storey: respectively these consist of plastered stacked blocks and a continuous plaster with panels. In the central projection is the double painted panel door with a segmental fanlight in which a gilded tree of life. The door with two-step stone doorstep is set in a moulded frame up to the projecting roll moulding at the height of the under-sills with visible ears.

The windows on either side of the central section are segmental arched with a string course.

The four-pane windows with fanlight on the upper floor were originally like the six-pane windows with metal glazing bars on the ground floor. The segmental arched window above the entrance on the upper floor has a moulded frame and a continuous under-sill on consoles decorated with little faces. The back facade is arranged with two rectangular windows on the upper floor, a wooden door with fanlight and a segmental arched window on the ground floor. The east facade is virtually blind, except for a segmental arched window under a string course. The western side facade is arranged with three balcony doors on the ground floor; above these are renewed windows, one of which is bricked up. The layout on the ground floor is largely unchanged, and the hall is in reasonably original condition. The upper floor has been rebuilt and much has been changed in the interior with regard to detailing; for example, the stucco ceilings have been removed.

The parsonage adjoins a former coach house on the north-east side. The coach house is largely of older date than the parsonage, except for the front facade.

Valuation

The former parsonage which was built around 1884 in Rottevalle is of cultural-historical and architectural importance because of:

- the original function in relation to the church opposite,

- the high degree of architectural integrity of the exterior,

- the simple but careful detailing,

- the special significance of the object for the village's appearance,

- the high degree of visual integrity in the streetscape.
