Inleiding

Introduction

The DWELLING HOUSE, which is typologically related to the smallholder farms, is one of the eight first workers' houses that the Woningstichting Smallingerland built here in 1909 as part of social housing construction. Six of them have been demolished; the second remaining house (no. 12) has been rendered architecturally of minor importance by recent modernisations to its exterior. The houses are situated on the edge of the village development on a spacious plot. The present house has undergone the most significant alterations in the shed section.

Description

The workers' house of the krimptype consists of a living room with a shed section under a continuous ridge. The krimp is asymmetrical. The gabled roof is covered with black burnt corrugated Frisian tiles. On the ridge at the front gable side a chimney has been built up with a concrete cap plate on the through-built corners. The gables are constructed of red stiff-pressed bricks on a sanded frame of clinker bricks: the dwelling house in solid brick, the shed section in half brick. In the gable top on the flue a concrete memorial stone has been built in with the inscription WSS 1909 (Woningstichting Smallingerland). The surround consists of a roll layer in red with, at the corners, yellow hand-moulded bricks. On the south side, next to the side entrance of the house stands a concrete rainwater pit.

In the front and side gables of the projecting living room are three six-pane windows under a course of red stiff-pressed bricks with imitation springer and closing stones in yellow hand-moulded bricks. In the gable top are two iron semi-circular attic windows with V-shaped glazing bars with a roll layer in alternating red and yellow hand-moulded bricks.

In the gable of the krimp wall is a small four-pane kitchen window. In the side gable of the small shed is a recessed double shed door; the recess is floored with red stiff-pressed bricks. In the rear section of the shed are two small windows: a semi-circular stable window with V-shaped tracery and a rectangular privy window.

The rear gable is virtually undecorated. The south side gable has, amongst other features, a recessed side entrance with a clamped door; the step is floored with red stiff-pressed bricks.

The interior still contains some original elements. In the shed amongst others two roof trusses with carpenters' marks (VIII and X) and a clay stable floor; the roof is partly unboarded.

The fitting-out of the living room is fairly original and contains amongst others the wooden floor, wooden wall panelling with a bed cupboard on the south side with intermediate cellar cupboard and a chimney mantel on blocks with tiled hearth section.

Valuation

The workers' house with an integral small shed on a spacious plot from 1909 is of cultural-historical and architectural value:

- as an expression of a social development, particularly of public housing,

- as a dated example of early social housing,

- as an expression of the emergence of the village from scattered development,

- because of its typological relationship with the smallholder farms,

- because of the high degree of architectural recognisability,

- because of the reasonable degree of visual integrity,

- because of the high degree of rarity.
