Inleiding
Relatief fors, voormalig Post- en Telegraafkantoor met dienst- woning, in 1920/'21 als vervanging van het oude postkantoor gebouwd in rationalistische trant.
Aan de Poststraat bevindt zich het postkantoor (sinds oktober 1992 buiten gebruik) en aan de Kerkstraat twee woningen.
Omschrijving
Sober uitgevoerd, grotendeels verdiepingloos bouwwerk met gevels opgetrokken uit roodbruine machinale baksteen in kruisverband. Natuurstenen vensterdorpels op de begane grond. Enig siermetselwerk in de geveltoppen. Boven de kantoor-entree aan de Poststraat, opgenomen in een topgevelgedeelte, een natuurstenen tableau met opschrift "Post- en Telegrafie". De kantoor-entree is voorzien van een houten panelendeur met bovenlicht met smeedwerk raamhekje en smalle zijlichten met roedeverdelingen. In de overige gevels reeksen slanke, houten kruiskozijnen met 1-paneels luiken voor de onderramen. Aan de Kerkstraat bevinden zich de twee sobere ingangen van de woningen en een kleine uitbouw onder een met pannen gedekt schilddakje. De zuidelijke woninggevel is deels uitgevoerd als topgevel, deels als langsgevel met verdieping waar tegen een rechthoekige uitbouw met gemetselde balustrade; tuindeur met zijlichten en draairamen in de uitbouw; balkondeur met zij-lichten boven de uitbouw en een stolpraam met luiken in de geveltop. Het pand is voorzien van een U-vormig omgezet schilddak met dwarskappen aan de noordelijke en zuidelijke gevel, gedekt met rode, verbeterde hollandse pannen en voorzien van soberehouten boeiboorden, windveren en dakkapellen.
Waardering
Als gaaf bewaard gebleven en in Zeeland zeldzaam voorbeeld van een fors Post- en Telegraafkantoor uit de twintiger jaren in een dorp, is het pand van belang uit cultuur- en architectuur-historisch oogpunt en uit oogpunt van de geschiedenis van het Post- en Telegraafwezen.

Description
Soberly executed, largely single-storey building with facades constructed of reddish-brown machine brick in cross bond. Natural stone window sills on the ground floor. Some ornamental brickwork in the gable tops. Above the office entrance on the Poststraat, incorporated in a top gable section, a natural stone tablet with the inscription "Post- en Telegrafie". The office entrance is provided with a wooden panelled door with fanlight with wrought-iron window grille and narrow sidelights with glazing bars. In the other facades series of slender, wooden cross windows with 1-panel shutters for the lower windows. On the Kerkstraat there are the two austere entrances of the dwellings and a small extension under a hipped roof covered with tiles. The southern dwelling facade is partly executed as a top gable, partly as a side facade with upper storey against which a rectangular extension with casemented balustrade; garden door with sidelights and casement windows in the extension; balcony door with sidelights above the extension and a fixed light with shutters in the gable top. The property is provided with a U-shaped converted hipped roof with cross gables on the northern and southern facades, covered with red, improved Dutch tiles and provided with austere wooden barge boards, ridge boards and roof dormers.
Valuation
As a well-preserved example and rare in Zeeland of a large Post and Telegraph Office from the twenties in a village, the property is of importance from a cultural and architectural-historical point of view and from the point of view of the history of the Post and Telegraph service.
