Inleiding

Introduction

Built to the design of A.C. Bleijs, VILLA (around 1880) in eclectic style, in which masonry and facade sculptures in the manner of, among others, neo-Renaissance are combined with a picturesque roof treatment. The villa, originally built as a notary's residence, stands on the east side of the Dorpsstraat, in the centre of Obdam. The ridge line is parallel to the street.

N.B. The single-storey extension on the rear side falls outside the protection.

Description

Villa built on a free ground plan consisting of ground floor, first storey and attic storey, under a roof composed of hipped and gabled roof with slate in Maas laying. The roof has a steep pitch and a rendered chimney on each of the two ridge points. The projecting guttering rests on carved corbels, the gabled roof has boarding around the wind braces and in the gable top (attic storey). The gable top contains the foot of a maker. The masonry is executed in red brick, in which speckled courses and diamond shapes are created for decoration by means of red-coloured pointing. The decoration includes furthermore among other things a string course at the level of the first-storey floor, as well as facade sculptures with representations of animal heads, corbels and keystones in terracotta. Below the string course is a frieze in red and yellow tiles. Moulding is also found under the gutter, among other things with tilework in red and yellow tiles and in the form of a dentil course. The asymmetrical front (W) has on the left a flat facade section of three window bays. To the right of this is a projecting facade section with the mentioned gable top and three-sided oriel on the ground floor. The windows on the ground floor are all arched sash windows with T-profile. The bay directly to the left of the projecting facade section contains an arched six-part window frame with a panelled door with iron fittings. The windows on the first storey are in the flat facade section all rectangular sash windows with T-profile. The projecting facade section has above the oriel a three-part window frame with a Serliana motif. The window frame contains among other things a double door with glass panels flanked by columnar elements with capitals. The double door gives access to the flat above the oriel which is bounded by a balustrade in masonry and sandstone. The attic storey has below the gable top an arched window frame with double fanlight and double panelled door. In front of this is a small balcony, resting on stepped corbels and composed of sandstone and iron. Above the middle bay of the recessed facade section is a roof dormer placed under a flat roof with cheeks and a double window. The left side (N) has on the ground floor an extension partly under a flat roof and partly under a slate-covered tent roof on an irregular ground plan in which arched wooden and iron windows are placed. On the front (W) of this extension is a panelled door with an arched fanlight. The first storey of the left side has on the right (W) a blind facade section with centrally placed sculpture. To the left of this are successively a double casement door with glass panels and a spandrel field. Above this is a substantial roof dormer with a central section placed below a pediment flanked by a double window. The roof dormer has a flat roof and cheeks. The right side (Z) has a central projection under a similar gable top as that on the front. The central projection has on the ground floor two arched double doors, on the first storey two T-windows and on the attic storey two double windows with triangular top. The ground floor of the right side has on either side of the central projection an arched window, the first storey is on either side of the central projection blind and provided with a central facade sculpture. The rear (O) as a result of extension and roof extension has only remained visible in its original form on the first storey and contains there a projecting central section with spandrel field and round window. The facade sections on either side of this central section have a T-window.

Valuation

The villa is of general importance from a cultural and architectural-historical perspective as a well-preserved example of late 19th-century villa architecture in the countryside. The villa has situational value through the prominent urban-planning situation.
